I was more than half way through the book before it finally grabbed me. The theme of the book is MONSTERS. You meet Eric and Violet who are cared for by their grandmother, Dr. Helen. Helen works at the psychiatric institute located within walking distance of their home. Violet and Eric are obsessed with Monsters! They love monster books and slip into the nearby drive-in whenever possible to watch the monster movies playing. They have even begun writing their own monster book. Violet has always wanted a sister, so when their grandmother brings Iris home to live with them, Violet is thrilled. At first Iris doesn't speak and her actions totally confuse Violet. When Violet learns that Iris has no knowledge of her past, Violet is determined to find out where she came from and who she really is. Violet begins investigating and learns not everyone is who she thought they were! I was totally surprised with the ending of the book and all in all, it was a fun read. Another excellent suspense novel from Jennifer McMahon. The suspense plot and mystery pulled me along and kept me engaged from start to finish. As usual, McMahon's rendering of character and setting were excellent, and the tension and timelines were well handled. I love the way that McMahon reveals the secret at the heart of her novel jigsaw piece by jigsaw piece, switching between the two timelines, the monster book, and the journalist's book and letting you realize how they fit together as she builds to the reveal. I put together some of the clues as I read, and I enjoyed that lovely zing that always comes when I hit reveals that confirmed my guesses. The ending was satisfying - surprising but also fitting and believable. The threads of the story were all tied up but not so tightly as to feel pat or contrived, and each character's choices and final situations felt true to the people McMahon had created throughout the story. The novel's exploration of monsters and monstrousness was interesting and insightful. The references to other monster stories, including Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, were fun and added depth and meaning to the story. I enjoyed this novel from start to finish, and it made me think as well. Definitely a full 4 star book. This one didn't really hit me. The reveal isn't bad, but the bouncing between time periods hurts the flow of the story rather than building tension as this technique does at its most effective. Reading this novel feels to me kind of like watching a firework streak up into the sky only to make a pretty but very modest fountain of sparks. A creepy story that’s part family drama and part monster hunting that turns into an intriguing mystery. The dual timeline, 1970s and current day, is handled very well and adds to the tension. Some twists and turns I saw coming and others not all all. I appreciate that the story was inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and love what McMahon did with the missing girl trope. "1978: At her renowned treatment center in picturesque Vermont, the brilliant psychiatrist, Dr. Helen Hildreth, is acclaimed for her compassionate work with the mentally ill. But when's she home with her cherished grandchildren, Vi and Eric, she's just Gran-teaching them how to take care of their pets, preparing them home-cooked meals, providing them with care and attention and love. Then one day Gran brings home a child to stay with the family. Iris-silent, hollow-eyed, skittish, and feral-does not behave like a normal girl. Still, Violet is thrilled to have a new playmate. She and Eric invite Iris to join their Monster Club, where they catalogue all kinds of monsters and dream up ways to defeat them. Before long, Iris begins to come out of her shell. She and Vi and Eric do everything together: ride their bicycles, go to the drive-in, meet at their clubhouse in secret to hunt monsters. Because, as Vi explains, monsters are everywhere. 2019: Lizzy Shelley, the host of the popular podcast Monsters Among Us, is traveling to Vermont, where a young girl has been abducted, and a monster sighting has the town in an uproar. She's determined to hunt it down, because Lizzy knows better than anyone that monsters are real-and one of them is her very own sister. A haunting, vividly suspenseful page-turner from the "literary descendant of Shirley Jackson" (Chris Bohjalian, author of The Flight Attendant), The Children on the Hill takes us on a breathless journey to face the primal fears that lurk within us all"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

The author engages the reader by taking us to 1978 and an isolated psychiatric facility in VT run by Dr. Hildreth, grandmother to Violet and Eric along with Iris, one of her patients. We then move to 2019 with Lizzy, aka MNSTRGRL a celebrity 'monster hunter' whose podcasts and TV show have a large following and learn she's on the hunt for a missing girl named Lauren. In between there are excerpts from The Book of Monsters written by Vi and Iris that add to reader engagement.
As the story plays out it gives the impression that Dr. Hildreth, aka Gran is a loving, caring grandmother who's also dedicated to her patients at "The Inn". When she brings Iris home, the girl doesn't speak and is afraid of her own shadow, but over time, she warms with Violet's help. Toggling back to Lizzy's narrative, we learn she's headed for VT to track down the missing girl since rumors of a monster named "Rattling Jane" have been tied to the disappearance.
Violet is the curious sort and as a result, she takes it upon herself to learn more about Iris. In the process, startling revelations about Gran arise and with them fear of what lies ahead. Rather than reveal plot points/spoilers, suffice it to say that discoveries are made by Vi and Iris, as well as those by Lizzy. As with most well crafted mysteries, the author throws surprise plot twists that help the reader solve the puzzle.
Well paced, written and unique, if this sort of mystery is of interest, its worth adding to your list. (
