AS SEEN ON THE TODAY SHOW * A high-altitude thriller that will take your breath away--Cecily Wong is on her most dangerous climb yet, miles above sea level. But the elements are nothing compared to one chilling truth: There's a killer on the mountain.   "A vertigo-inducing page-turner by an author who brings the high-stakes world of expert mountain-climbing to life on the page." --Nita Prose, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maid Journalist Cecily Wong is in over her head. She's come to Manaslu, the eighth-highest peak in the world, to interview internationally famous mountaineer Charles McVeigh on the last leg of a record-breaking series of summits. She's given up everything for this story--her boyfriend, her life savings, the peace she's made with her climbing failures in the past--but it's a career-making opportunity. It could finally put her life back on track.   But when one climber dies in what everyone else assumes is a freak accident, she fears their expedition is in danger. And by the time a second climber dies, it's too late to turn back. Stranded on a mountain in one of the most remote regions of the world, she'll have to battle more than the elements in a harrowing fight for survival against a killer who is picking them off one by one.  … (més)

Cecily Wong is a journalist who has been promised an exclusive interview with renowned mountain climber, Charles McVeigh. However, there is one condition, Charles won't do the interview until Cecily has summited the Manaslu, the 8th highest peak in the world. Cecilly is anxious due to a previous incident on a mountain, however she can't ignore the opportunity.
The story is terrifying as Cecily begins hearing and seeing things while on the mountain. When a climber dies mysteriously, the terror ratchets up. As the stakes and the climb gets higher, Cecily starts wondering who to trust.
The writing was very descriptive allowing you to imagine the bleakness and the danger of the mountain, the necessity to depend on your team, and the terror in not knowing who is a danger to you. It will leave you breathless. ( )

> Just after summiting Manaslu in September 2019, while still in the death zone, I sat down in the snow, took out my notebook and started to write. What I wrote up there won’t see the light of day – I was hypoxic, exhausted and my handwriting is almost impossible to read! But I knew even then that I had to write a novel about my time on the mountain. ( )

I liked the mountaineering aspects of this book and you can tell the author has experience in this field. It felt genuine. There were multiple times during this book the story felt very YA. The dialogue and the way the characters behaved made me roll my eyes at times. But is was the author's first foray into adult fiction so I'll give it a bit of a pass. ( )

Cecily is a reporter who has only tried climbing the three highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales. Her ex (and fellow reporter), James, was the mountain climber and he wanted to do the three in 24 hours. Although Cecily failed to do it, she was hailed a hero after she stayed with someone while rescuers were on their way. Cecily’s blog (to James’ consternation) brought her to the attention of famous climber, Charles McVeigh, who is trying to climb (I can’t recall how many) 8,000 m peaks in a year without Oxygen or fixed ropes (alpine style). He has one peak left to do and he invites Cecily to join him with the promise of an exclusive story if she can summit.

Unfortunately, people are dying on the mountain. That’s not unusual in mountain climbing, but there is something suspicious here. And Cecily (along with a few others) is convinced she often hears someone whistling outside her tent some nights; she follows one night to find a lone tent no one knew was there. As a reporter, she also tends to ask a lot of questions.

This pulled me in right away and I thought it was suspenseful from the start. But then, I like thrillers, as well as mountain-climbing stories, though I’m not sure I’ve ever read a fictional mountain climbing story – they can be suspenseful and exciting all on their own without adding a murder mystery to the mix! I did pick out someone as suspicious early on in the book. No surprise to read at the end that the author has climbed this particular mountain in the story herself. ( )

Cecily Wong is a journalist who is invited on an expedition to climb one of the tallest mountains. Charles McVeigh is one of the most experienced climbers and has promised Cecily the interview of a lifetime at the summit. Things don't go to plan and Cecily is in danger.

I was intrigued by this book but it certainly didn't leave me breathless. At first I enjoyed the story but did start to feel bogged down.

There is a lot about mountains and climbing in the story. Yes I know its a thriller based on a mountain but I felt the story at times was more like a manual for climbing. It's very clear the author knows about the subject but it did seem to dominate.

I do feel disappointed with the book and wanted to like it a lot more than I did. I did go into the book blind so didn't know what to expect. If there had been less technical and more plot it would have been far more enjoyable for me. ( )
