This fairytale is a classic tale about a little girl who walks in the woods to go to her grandmother's house. Her mother advises her not to speak to any strangers along the way, but a wolf approaches her, and she disobeys her mother's wishes and speaks to the wolf. The wolf makes it to her grandmother's house before Little red riding hood and eats her grandmother. Little red riding hood knocks on her grandmother's door to find the wolf in her grandmother's clothing. She analyzes her grandmother and realizes that her grandmother is the wolf. The wolf eats Little red riding hood in this edition, and a hunter comes to save them both by killing the wolf and cutting him open to reveal grandma and Little red riding hood. I have always enjoyed reading the many different versions of this fairytale. I have read this to my students in the past, and they have experienced it also. It teaches a good lesson to young children that they should not speak to strangers and reiterates by showing how a wolf can be in sheep's clothing. ( )

In my opinion the tale of Red Riding Hood retold and illustrated by James Marshall is an okay book. In comparison to other traditional folktales, it isn’t my favorite, but it also isn’t my least favorite. I liked that the author retold the folktale so that it is comprehensible and accessible to all readers. Folktales can be confusing since they are not realistic and requires one to use their imagination. The author helps readers to better understand the story with appropriate illustrations that relate to the text. For example, the story says “he put on Granny’s cap and glasses, jumped into bed, and pulled up the covers.” The illustration appropriately shows the wolf doing just that which helps to reinforce the text and makes it more understandable. The overall message of Red Riding Hood is to not trust or speak to strangers. I think this is an important message, however I think the message is delivered in an odd way. The folktale pretty much says that if you talk to a stranger you will be eaten by a wolf. I think it would be better interrupted if it was clearer in the sense that if you talk or trust a stranger, you may get taken advantage of. The wolf did just that by asking Red Riding Hood where her grandmother lived and suggesting she pick flowers for her grandmother. ( )

Red Riding Hood is a story about a little girl that goes to visit her grandmother, but something unexpected happens. I liked this book for a few reasons. First, I liked it because it has a good underlying moral story. Second, it keeps you engaged because the reader wants to know what happens next. Third, the characters were well-developed throughout the story. ( )
