I'm probably one of a very few people who has sat and read the Synopticon from front to back. Though it might seem like a strange practice, nearly like reading the dictionary or an encyclopedia, I can't recommend the practice enough. The wealth of knowledge contained in these pages is enormous, and you will be shocked at how quickly you can read 1100+ pages because it is so absorbing and difficult to put down. (

This is a continuation of the first Chapter of the Synopticon, in that it has chapters for each topic, including an introductory essay and a selection of references from the great books series as well as other references. It also includes a section on Synoptical reading, which is pretty hard going.

Now I have finished these introductory books I can actually start the Great Books series! (

The Synopticon is a two volume thematic index with additional material to the Britannica Great Books of the Western World. It is volumes 2 and 3 of the 1st (1952, 54 volume, Robert Maynard Hutchins editor) edition, volumes 1 and 2 of the 2nd (1990, 61 volume, Mortimer J. Adler editor). Adler was assistant editor to the first edition as well, and largely responsible for the Synopticon. The versions differ somewhat between the two editions (necessarily since the contents indexed changed a bit) but the framework is the same.
