Upgrade is the new mind-bending thriller from Blake Crouch, author of the bestselling Dark Matter and Recursion."You are the next step in human evolution. . ." At first, Logan Ramsay isn't sure if anything's different. He just feels a little sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep. But before long, he can't deny it: something's happening to his brain. To his body. He's starting to see the world, and those around him, even those he loves most, in whole new ways. The truth is, Logan's genome has been hacked. And there's a reason he's been targeted for this upgrade. A reason that goes back decades to the darkest part of his past, and a horrific family legacy. Worse still, what's happening to him is just the first step in a much larger plan, one to inflict the same changes on humanity at large, and at a terrifying cost. Because of what Logan's becoming, he's the one person in the world capable of stopping what's been set in motion. But to have a chance at winning this war, he'll have to become something other than himself. And even as he's fighting, he can't help wondering: what if humanity's only hope for a future really does lie in engineering our own evolution...… (més)

If I had four or five PHDs I still wouldn’t understand a fraction of all the scientific data in this book. Quantum computing applications, intersection of science and philosophy, a war of genes and mutations, a war with natural selection, a slap dash heart racing sci-if thriller. I just wish I understood more of the background garble. Despite all that, it was an action packed story that never let up.

In the most simplistic terms this book examines stakes that are larger “than ideology, territory or even religion. The stakes were the future of our species. Where we were going. What we would become.” Set amidst a decayed and decaying country, much of which is unrecognizable to us in this century, a titanic battle between siblings is being waged. Each is only concerned with the salvation of the human race - it is all in the perspective and they are diametrically opposite.

Rounding up as I thank Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the copy. ( )

I think Crouch's other books have more surprising plots, or interesting premises. This fell flat. It is buzzword science fiction, and the writing and characters are no stronger than typical Crouch.

> I kept returning to the exascale or quantum-annealing processor she would need. … Only eight companies in the world built the type of hardware she would need: Atom Computing, Xanadu, IBM, ColdQuanta, Zapata Computing, Azure Quantum, and Strangeworks. ( )

Another great sci‑fi thriller from Blake Crouch. It asks the question, what if we upgraded the human race? Genetically engineered a smarter, physically superior GMO version of ourselves. Would it solve our problems or just give us newer, maybe bigger, ones to deal with?”
Does it measure up to Crouch’s Dark Matter or Recursion? For mind-bending, reality-twisting awesomeness I have to say no, but it’s still outstanding speculative science fiction. ( )

This book is set in a future where gene modification nearly wiped out humanity. Logan works for a government department investigation cases of gene modification. During a raid an explosion launches a virus into Logan's body which changes and enhances his genes. When the changes begin to manifest, his coworkers place him in a black site location to test and monitor the modifications. Logan's sister, who has also been modified, breaks him out of the black site. Together, they learn that their mother is behind the changes, with a plan to change the entire world.

I like Blake Crouch and his storytelling, but I did not enjoy this particular book. I am not a fan of "super" humans, and do not enjoy this type of book. The author did a good job with the subject matter, it just wasn't for me. I am looking forward to the author's next book, he is definitely one of the greats! ( )
