Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher--for that world or ours. Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself--and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it. Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world. King's storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy--and his dog--must lead the battle. Early in the Pandemic, King asked himself: "What could you write that would make you happy?" "As if my imagination had been waiting for the question to be asked, I saw a vast deserted city--deserted but alive. I saw the empty streets, the haunted buildings, a gargoyle head lying overturned in the street. I saw smashed statues (of what I didn't know, but I eventually found out). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with glass towers so high their tips pierced the clouds. Those images released the story I wanted to tell."… (més)

So far, very hard to get into. ( )

Reminiscent of [The Talisman], Uncle Stevie's imagination is at top pitch here. The first third of the book plants its feet firmly in the everyday world, with all its grief and daily horror, while only hinting at the presence of another world buried deep under Chalie Reade's neighbor's home. The time we spend with Charlie and his dad and Mr. Bowditch is heartbreakingly rich. For those afraid to pick up a King novel, fearful of gore or deep fright, this is a relatively safe place - but King is always more interested in the mundane horrors of life and the human heart. Once Charlie descends to the other realm, the battle between good and evil is set. Like [The Talisman] or [Wizard and Glass], King's keenly honed imagination cuts through to the surface. Sure, illusions to [The Dark Tower] rebound through the pages, because there are other worlds than these. Yet each new world is built of whole cloth and intricately woven into the larger tapestry. This one has the heart of [Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption], achingly sentimental without one saccharine note.

Highly Recommended!

Pretty much true to its title, this King novel is a lot closer to fantasy than horror. It reminded me a bit of [Eyes of the Dragon] and [The Talisman], and of course there were references to [The Dark Tower] series with its interconnected worlds. The characters were endearing, and the fairy tale allusions were fun, but I felt it could have been a great deal shorter than it was and would have packed a stronger punch. ( )

i've always said king was a great storyteller, but this book really goes out of its way to prove he's also an amazing writer. unusual plot, great characters, taut dialogue, and fascinating world-building... in a few years, i'd love to see another story from this universe... ( )

Book 72 that I have read from Stephen King. As a constant reader this the latest offering from King written during the pandemic was a welcome change. Not really a fan of fantasy per say although I have dabbled in this genre in the past this book which is a mixture of fantasy and horror was enjoyable. There is also a strong theme of love that pervades this story - love of a boy and his dog, love of a boy for his mon and dad and a woman from another land. Make no mistake it is a long book that winds, twists and turns. Will make a good feature length movie which I will certainly watch when it comes out. ( )
