Return to Kay L. Moody's magical world of Bitter Thorn in this first book in a brand new series featuring a mortal girl, a fae warrior, and a fight that could kill everyone she loves. But vows were made to be broken. As a human girl, Chloe is perfectly happy being back in the mortal realm where she belongs. She's even become the town apothecary. When a fae from her past shows up begging her to return to Faerie, she utterly refuses. But then she finds out an angry group of mortals are using iron to hold an entire castle full of fae hostage. And of course, the hostages include Chloe's older sister and her sister's beloved. Reluctantly, Chloe packs a bag for what is supposed to be a short trip to Faerie. But the mortals are more powerful than she expected. To fuel them, they have weapons, flames, and revenge. They won't stop until they control every court in Faerie. With the help of a new and mysterious magic and a devastatingly handsome fae companion, Chloe has to save Faerie before her sister and the other fae are killed. Flame and Crystal Thorns is the first book in a new YA fae fantasy series. This is a spin off of The Fae of Bitter Thorn series by Kay L. Moody. It features a few appearances and minor spoilers from The Fae of Bitter Thorn, but it also stands alone as its own series. It can be read without any prior knowledge or reading of The Fae of Bitter Thorn.… (més)

I really enjoyed reading about this female lead. Typically, the heroine is there kicking down doors ad sprigging into action when there’s a conflict – or at least that’s been my experience – but Chloe is a healer at heart and not one to go running towards danger. The premise of the story felt very well-rounded to me and I was able to picture things in a more realistic way – even if the time the book is set in doesn’t reflect the current period. I’m not normally one for books about the fae, sometimes it just gets too complicated and convoluted for me, but the way this story was written made it easier for me to read through without feeling like I was drowning in information. I was able to read this book without having read the series that originally introduced the characters, but now I kind of want to go back and read Chole and Quintus’s back story for more information. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series and see where the author takes the story from here! ( )

This book is exciting and full of fantastical adventure. Chloe is up against time. Somehow, people in her town are turning up with scarpus, which is affecting her baby sister, Grace, also. Quintus, is an annoying fae come to bug her to come back to Faerie to save them from the mortals attacking. Her older sister, Elora, has been captured. What a predicament! What shall she do? The adventures abound for Chloe and those around her. She must make tough decisions. She is strong and courageous young woman. I love how she is not afraid to put Quintus in his place. She stands up for family. She tries to do what's right. The other characters are well-developed. Grace's personality fit her to a T. Her description just matched how she moved through the story. Quintus reminded me of a chauvenistic male. The plot had really good flow. For adventures flowing from the beginning, there was no real choppiness. Toss in a few twists and you really have a terrific story. I found this book fascinating and I'm looking forward to reading more. ( )

I thought I loved Elora, but Chloe is perfection! I don't know how Kay Moody does it, but her books get better and better as she creates new scenarios for her characters to extricate themselves from.

Chloe never wanted to return to Faerie. Her sister and brother-in-law could visit her as much as they wanted to, but she was content to stay in the mortal world where she was known for her skills as an apothecary. Besides, Faerie was dangerous. It was her sister who was good at fighting and protecting others. Chloe froze when it was time to act. Best to play it safe. So when the fae she hated most in both worlds came to ask her for help in saving Faerie, there was nothing to consider. Her sister was clearly the best person for the job. Until she wasn't.

Filled with rapid speed twists and turns, unexpected consequences, smart-mouth humans and fae, and all the trickery we have come to expect in Faerie, Chloe, who has always put others before herself, must decide what matters most, who she can save, and if she will survive any of it. It's a thrilling adventure!

I received an ARC from the author and have reviewed it willingly because it was exceptional. And as always with Kay's books, I lost a bit of sleep because I simply needed to know what happened next! ( )
