Stories make us feel connected, Even when we are physically alone, provide comfort during challenges, and by the bold act of sharing our pain and suffering, our pain and suffering are eased, The book you are holding is a collaboration of 40 women elders (some friends, some friends of friends, and some who have never met) who generously shared their experience of the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to record this extraordinary collective moment in time. Women Elders Speak may seem like a minuscule sampling of the population, insignificant as a drop in the ocean, yet Rumi reminds us, "You are the entire ocean in a drop." It is with that perspective that we invite readers to read and listen to these older women whose long lives have had a wide range of experiences and who have served others in such diverse professions as doctors, nurses, and mental health workers, writers, poets, and a librarian, teachers, professors and an associate dean, artists and a graphic designer, attorneys and a legal assistant, ranchers and a water authority director, an airlines customer service agent, a director of publications, a sales and marketing rep, a commissioner, a Montana representative, a music producer, a postal worker, and a pastor. This book combats those subtle, and not-so-subtle, forces that tell women, especially older women, that their value and experiences are less than. The presence of this book suggests otherwise, and we encourage you to enjoy and listen deeper when women elders speak. -Jayne Maginot, Editor Book jacket.
