![]() No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. An intense and thrilling read. I do wish the story had more action like during the “games” but this didn’t take away from the book. Perfect amount of suspense/mystery to keep you engaged throughout. I'm a huge Catherine Steadman fan and have read all of her books--this one did not disappoint! Although all of her books are in the domestic suspense genre, they are really different from each other with original and fun plots. The protagonist, Harriet (Harry), is engaged to Edward, the perfect man. The story begins when she meets his very wealthy (and strange) family, and Edward's father hands her a cassette tape containing some shocking information. Harry begins investigating, and we're right there with her in not knowing who to trust or believe. The plot moves along quickly, and I found myself furiously turning the pages to find out what happened next. Some twists and turns at the end which I didn't see coming made this a really entertaining and fast-paced read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC! Harriet, who has just published a wildly successful novel, has emigrated to the United States to be with the love of her life, Edward. Edward comes from a very wealthy “old money” family from whom he has been estranged. The family hopes that Harriet will bring Edward back into the fold. But, they are a family who likes dangerous games, starting with a tape that the patriarch gives her. Will Harriet succeed at the games and will her long held secret remain just that….secret? A lot of readers really liked this book. I liked the atmospheric writing and enjoyed that it was a quick, engrossing read. However, I thought the storyline a bit much. There is a saying “the rich are different”. Are they really THAT different? As the action spirals downward to the ending, which was not a surprise, I felt the entire story deteriorated. And don’t get me started on Harriet’s careless treatment of the tape. I have to point out that I am a reader who does not like to suspend belief when I read. Those who are comfortable doing this will probably like the book much more than I did. I have enjoyed Steadman’s books in the past and will certainly seek out her next one. Thanks to #netgalley and #ballentinebooks for the ARC. Harry’s life is going well. Her first book is a hit, just got engaged to a handsome wealthy man, and is finally getting the family she always hoped for. Be careful what you wish for! This wealthy family is odd, enjoying weird games at the holidays and a little bit too much closeness. A domestic thriller like no other. It will have you turning the pages quickly to see what is in store for for Harry. Interesting storyline with a crazy cast of characters that shows what money can buy and that, in the end, it is not everything. Thanks to Ms. Steadman, Random House Publishing/Ballantine Books and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
"A rich, eccentric family. A time-honored tradition. Or a lethal game of survival? One woman finds out what it really takes to join the 1% in this riveting psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water. Harry is a novelist on the brink of stardom; Edward, her husband-to-be, is seemingly perfect. In love and freshly engaged, their bliss is interrupted by the reemergence of the Holbecks, Edward's eminent family and the embodiment of American old money. For years, they've dominated headlines and pulled society's strings, and Edward left them all behind to forge his own path. But there are eyes and ears everywhere. It was only a matter of time before they were pulled back in . . . After all, even though he's long severed ties with his family, Edward is set to inherit it all. Harriet is drawn to the glamour and sophistication of the Holbecks, who seem to welcome her with open arms, but everything changes when she meets Robert, the inescapably magnetic head of the family. At their first meeting, Robert slips Harry a cassette tape, revealing a shocking confession which sets the inevitable game in motion. What is it about Harry that made him give her that tape? A thing that has the power to destroy everything? As she ramps up her quest for the truth, she must endure the Holbecks' savage Christmas traditions all the while knowing that losing this game could be deadly"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

Harry worries that if the tape comes to light, Edward will look at her differently. On Christmas, they go to the Hydes, the family estate in NY and everyone is told to play a special family game. What Harry doesn't know at the start of the game is how she will have to fight to survive, and how everything will change if she loses the game.
Another good thriller from Catherine Steadman. (
