"The remarkable true story of the world's first giraffologist. At three years old, Anne Dagg saw her first giraffe and never stopped thinking about it. Her desire to study the world's tallest animal followed her from preschool to graduate school, from Canada to South Africa. And often, people laughed at her quest. The scientific study of giraffes was non-existent at the time. And by a woman? Unheard of. But by following her love of giraffes, Dr. Anne Innis Dagg became a pioneer -- the first person to study animal behavior in Africa (four years before Jane Goodall!). Today, the world-renowned giraffologist is the author of many groundbreaking books about giraffe behavior and the subject of the acclaimed documentary The Woman Who Loves Giraffes. This picture book biography includes an afterword, a bibliography and a Q&A with Dr. Dagg, in which she provides valuable insight into her life's work."--… (més)

I recently read and loved the book The Girl Who Loved Giraffes: And Became the World’s First Giraffologist by Kathy Stinson and illustrated by François Thisdale. I was interested in reading more. I found this book because it was mentioned in a comment on a review of that book. It was available immediately from my library so I borrowed it. I wanted to read it while the other book was still fresh in my mind.

This is another wonderful book!

The illustrations are really great.

The story is also told well, perhaps for a slightly younger audience. The author did interview Anne Innis Dagg for the book. The reader gets to read what she says. As with the other book, I learned some things about giraffes.

There is some information in this book that was not in the other book, and vice versa. (Was Anne 4 or 6 when she saw a giraffe in a zoo and first became interested in studying them? This book says 4; the other book says 6. Other than that discrepancy I don’t think the facts in either book contradicted the other. I admire how Anne knew from a young age what she wanted to do and then made it happen, even though she got no support from society at that time.) This book talks about her bout with scarlet fever at age 12 and about how not only did she advocate for giraffes and women’s rights but she was also anti-apartheid/for civil rights. Those facts were not mentioned in the other book.

In the back there is an author’s note, quotes by Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, the interview between the author and subject, a photo of Innis-Dagg as an older woman, and lists for: Resources for Kids (which includes the other picture book I just read) and author’s sources, books, film, news reports and websites including the Anne Innis Dagg’s official website: www,anneinnisdaggfoundation.org.

To think that before this year I never knew about this fascinating and accomplished woman. I’d like to see the film about her and read some of her books. For now I’m grateful for the two picture books that I’ve read.

4-1/2 stars ( )

Synergy: Giraffes

GIRAFFES are African hoofed mammals. Their extremely long neck and legs along with their spotted coat makes them easy to recognize. Giraffes are a vulnerable species and some subspecies are critically endangered.
