Find his lover's murderer and never again let anyone close enough to get hurt. The last thing he wants is the complication of escorting a naïve runaway through the wilderness. Elspeth Cadwgan has tried to be the good daughter her family expects. Until being the good daughter meant a life in a loveless marriage. She wants the chance to see the world and find her purpose. Magic wasn't part of her plans. Can two people find a way to get through this journey? Will they find what they are both searching for. Cyrus & Elspeth are both strong characters that only add their own personality to the story. A great fantasy world that works well. Thank you Librarything for the copy. This is my voluntary review. ( )

A Treachery of Ravens is the first in a new fantasy series set in the kingdom of Osmaria. Elspeth Cadwgan is a young woman from a small village. Faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage, she runs away to find her own path. She enlists the help of wanderer Cyrus Arbritrem to guide her through the wilderness to the capitol, Cyrus is searching the kingdom for his lover’s murderer. Escorting a naive run-away doesn’t fit into his plans. But he finds himself caring about the strong-willed Elspeth and wanting to help her achieve her dreams.

When individuals in Osmaria begin to show growing magical abilities, including Elspeth, the pair find themselves dealing with enemies from within, and without the kingdom.

This is an interesting start to a fantasy series. The author takes a long time introducing us to the main characters during their travels through the kingdom. The introduction of magic is done well and naturally. We meet some interesting characters once the pair join the court at the capitol. Hopefully we will learn more about them in future books. I found the encounter with the main villain a bit rushed and confusing. The reason for his actions was not very clear. I also was unsure why the author included the cad in the palace who became involved with Elspeth. It didn’t seem necessary to the plot. Possibly he will play a role in future books.

Overall, there is some interesting world-building and strong characters in a fantasy that takes a long time to get going and leaves some questions open for future books. ( )
