This book is about Nora and her grandparent's horse Bonnie who is very pregnant with a foal. Nora is really excited for the foal to be born and her along with her grandparents continually go to check on Bonnie. Each time however, there is no foal. Until finally it arrives.
This book would fit into the contemporary realistic fiction, as it is about a more modern child who lives on a farm with her grandparents. Everything about the story is normal and is simply about waiting for something exciting to happen.
This could be read to any age of students as anyone would be able to identify with the little girl waiting.

This realistic fiction book tells the story of a family who is waiting for their horse to have a baby. Every night and every day, Nora and her Gramp and Gran check on their horse Bonnie to see if she has had her foal yet, but it still doesn't come. Nora takes Bonnie on walks each day to get exercise, but the foal still stays inside of her. Her Gran and Gramp start getting exhausted from walking back and forth to the barn so often every day and night to check on the horse, and so Nora goes that night to check the barn. When she gets there, the new foal is there. Her grandparents come and they watch as the foal lifts himself up to stand and drink milk. Nora's grandma says that they should name the foal Finally, because he finally was there.

Genre: Realistic fiction
Age Appropriateness: Primary
Review: This picture book is a good example of realistic fiction because it shows what it is like waiting for a baby horse to be born. It captures the anticipation that children may have when waiting for anything.

Media: Watercolors and colored pencils ( )

This is a good example of realistic fiction because is a story that comes across as being true or could possibly be real, even though it is made up. It also relates to a child's life through personal values by teaching children to be patient.
A teacher could use this book in the classroom to teach the class about horses being born. Maybe even take a trip to a farm to see baby horses or a foal being born.
The media in this book is oil paints.
The character is not built much in this story, but it does show the love and kindness this girl has toward the horse and excitment for a new foal in the barn. This portrays her character, but little is being built off of it. ( )
