A couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.

They broke up five months ago. And still haven??t told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group??s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they??ll all have together in this place. They can??t stand to break their friends?? hearts, and so they??ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. Happy Place made me miss my friends! The miscommunication trope was there, but the aging of relationships, the climactic conflicts, and the charm of every character onpage cancelled out any of my usual frustration with the trope. I feel like everyone has a favorite Emily Henry, this one's mine. ( )

I usually really like Emily Henry books, but did not enjoy this one. ( )

Harriet has had two best friends since her college days, Sabrina and Cleo. Year after year, they met at Sabrina's father's summer house in Maine and had a great time there, initially just the three of them, but now all in couples. Now the summer house is being sold, and it will be the last time they come together there. So Sabrina has planned one last week together and invited everyone, including Harriet's boyfriend Wyn. No one knows that the two have been separated for six months. To not spoil the vacation for their friends, they initially behave as if they are still together.
I already knew that "Happy Place" wouldn't be a literary masterpiece, but rather a romantic and predictable feel-good story. However, the book had some shortcomings that made it increasingly difficult for me to read. First of all, the book is relatively drawn-out. Almost three-quarters of the story are spent depicting Harriet's and Wyn's past - they were a real dream couple - and then zooming back into their present - they still love each other. Not only Harriet herself but every reader wonders why the two even broke up. Then, all six characters are portrayed extremely superficially, and you can't connect with any of them. Harriet and Wyn are cute, sure, but that's about it, and the rest remains largely opaque. In the last quarter of the book, suddenly all the problems within the clique are addressed, including the reasons for the breakup between Harriet and Wyn, and even Harriet's difficulties with her sister and mother are somehow resolved.
Honestly, I found it too superficial and cheap. Unfortunately, I didn't particularly like the book, although I enjoy RomComs and would have been very much in the mood for a nice feel-good read! ( )

this book. Hmmmm....well, I can do 3.75 thanks to the last 1/4 of the book. I may change my mind later, but I read Book Lovers first and I liked that one more.
I think it was the extreme lack of communication from anyone in this group and it caused so much un needed chaos. Some of it was completely understandable....some of it. I loved the raw chemistry between Harriet and Wyn. I adore the friendship between the whole group and the real pull of time and change.

Some stuff did hit personally home for me and that helped me relate on a deep level. ( )

So this one won Best Romance. I haven't read from Emily Henry until I got this one alongside others from the library. After reading a heavy novel, I didn't want to experience another one like that. I eventually picked it up and read Happy Place and found it a pleasant surprise. I can see why it would win an award, and after reading this, I wonder if Emily Henry's other works are as entertaining.

It starts with the first two characters I see, Harriet and Wyn, whose last names remain undisclosed, living their ultimate hedonistic lives where nothing could go wrong. Except that Harriet and Wyn broke up but they don't want to tell anyone about that. But over the course of the narrative, I struggle to comprehend why Happy Place said Harriet and Wyn faked their relationship, because it felt more genuine than superficial. Is that the point? It must be. With that out of the way, Happy Place shines in its pacing and characters which are engaging and likable respectively. The former can drag at times and sometimes I can't connect or relate to the latter, but at least I can like them. The conclusion is a high note where Harriet and Wyn use their second chance to restore and restart their relationship. What a story. ( )
