Lt. Sam Holland and President Nick Cappuano are once again faced with murder cases to solve and problems facing the country. While Nick plans his first State of the Union address, Sam deals with the backlash of disobeying an order as well as a broken hip that sidelines her temporarily. She also picks up a new case involving a serial rapist that has now escalated to murder. Many of Sam's and Nick's family and friends are also dealing with personal and professional issues of their own. Through it all, Sam and Nick manage to enjoy their love story and maintain a solid relationship.

State of the Union continues the story of the First Family and all of the characters in their world. Marie Force manages to keep these books believable enough to keep the stories interesting and make it easy to invest in the characters, however, as more and more characters are added, it does become difficult to keep up with all of them. Also, the voices of the characters do tend to blend together. Overall, though, State of the Union is an entertaining story that is difficult to put down. (
