( ) Baby elephant Ruby lives at the Park with the rest of her small elephant herd; her friend Ivan, a silverback gorilla, lives nearby, and a small dog called Bob is their frequent visitor. As Ruby's "Tuskday" approaches, readers discover the reason for her reluctance, and the reason she doesn't like her tusks: it has to do with what "bad humans" will do to get elephant tusks, and Ruby's history in Africa. But as another elephant advises, Ruby can't outrun growing up: that's a race she won't win. Through telling her story to a caring audience, Ruby gains courage to go forward. Novel in verse. See also: The One and Only Ivan and The One and Only Bob. Fine to read as a standalone or out of order. Y'all. I adore One and Only Ivan. I ALWAYS recommend it. It is absolutely deserving of the Newbery Medal that it won. But.....I think I love The One and Only Ruby more. Yes. Yes I said it. Perhaps it is because it is an elephant (and I adore elephants). Perhaps it is because the voice of Ruby is innocent and yet experienced, happy and yet said. Absolutely, utterly, and completely one of growing up. Pain and loss, heartbreak and joy. All of it is found once again in Katherine Applegate's writing. I cannot help but wonder if this book will win a Newbery like its predecessor. Because, I was taken to Africa with the words. I smelled the smoke Ruby smelled. I felt how nervous she was for Tuskday. I felt her love for Ivan and George and Jabari. Seriously, read this book. Recommend the crap out of this book. THIS is how middle grade fiction should read. Well that was a heart wrenching and beautiful story. I love that Katherine Applegate talks about conservation efforts and doing your part to not support elephants in captivity (i.e., circus, roadside zoos, etc.). I cried so many times while Ruby was telling her story to Ivan and Bob, even though I know this particular story is fiction, there are just too many elephants that live through this exact story. A fantastic read and I highly recommend! Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

HTML: An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! From beloved powerhouse author Katherine Applegate comes The One and Only Ruby, starring the adorable baby elephant from the Newbery Medal-winning modern classic The One and Only Ivan and its bestselling sequel, The One and Only Bob. Ruby's story picks up a few months after the events of The One and Only Bob. Now living in a wildlife sanctuary, Ruby's caretaker from the elephant orphanage in Africa where she grew up is visiting. Seeing him again brings back a flood of memories both happy and sad of her life before the circus, and she recounts the time she spent in the African savannah to Ivan and Bob. In the timeless way that only Katherine Applegate could craft, this highly anticipated novel in verse is the perfect mix of heartfelt and humorous, poignant and sweet. Artist Patricia Castelao returns to the world of Ivan and his friends with gorgeous black-and-white interior illustrations to complete the story. The One and Only Ruby features first-person narrative; author's use of literary devices (personification, imagery); and story elements (plot, character development, perspective). This middle grade novel is an excellent choice for tween readers in grades 5 to 8, for independent reading, homeschooling, and sharing in the classroom. Don't miss the film adaptation of The One and Only Ivan, now streaming on Disney+! .No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
