This book is a staple for children across the US. This book is great for young students. An early elementary school classroom would benefit greatly from this book because of how descriptive it is. Adjectives and descriptions are a common theme for children's books. ( )

Alexander first gets gum stuck in his hair which is only the start of his terrible day. One thing seems to come right after the other for him and when he looks for sympathy from his family, he gets very little. He wonders if he is the only one that has bad things happen to him. Soon, he realizes that his family has their own struggles that they go through every day. ( )

realistic fiction-

rom the moment Alexander wakes up, everything goes wrong! He wakes up with gum in his hair, fights with his friends, and has to eat lima beans for dinner. At the end of his rough day, Alexander learns some days are just like that. All kids experience this type of day and will be glad to find they are not alone!

I think this is a good book because it shows that it is okay to have a bad day. Everyone has a bad day every once in awhile. What matters is how you handle it and how you control yourself. I think that is an important lesson for students to learn.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day / written by Judith Viorst; illustrated by Ray Cruz -- New York : Aladdin Paperbacks / Simon & Schuster, c1972. (32 pages) RANGE 3 -- PICTURE BOOKS

SUMMARY: One day when everything is going wrong for him, Alexander is consoled by the thought that other people have bad days too. (Verso)

REVIEW: One of my all-time favorites because I have had many days like Alexander. Nothing will go right and I think the older brothers sometimes make it worse. -- I like everything about this book except the pictures which are very detailed black and white sketches but no color illustrations. -- I also like Alexander's standard response - "I think I'll move to Australia."

The text is wonderful and reads just like a boy telling his version of the story -- in long sentences -- without taking a breath.

NOTE: Also check out the other Alexander title -- ALEXANDER, WHO USED TO BE RICH LAST SUNDAY

FURTHER FUN: Have child write a followup story about the day that everything goes right for Alexander -- The Terrific, Wonderful, Amazing, Very Good Day, etc. ( )

Alexander has a bad start to his day when he wakes up with gum in his hair and it gets worse from there. His mom doesn’t pack him dessert in his lunch, and the store doesn’t have the shoes he wants. He gets in a fight with his brother, and he doesn’t like what’s on TV. Alexander wants to move Australia. In the end, his mom tells him some days are just bad (even in Australia). I would recommend this story to children because they can relate to Alexander’s frustrations. The book also teaches them that running away from their problems is not going to make them go away, and no matter where they are, they’ll have to deal with their emotions. I would enjoyed this book because I’ve seen the movie, and I wanted to see what the book was like. It was different in many aspects and more simple, but I still enjoyed the storyline.

I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
