The Assistant, Bernard Malamud's second novel, originally published in 1957, is the story of Morris Bober, a grocer in postwar Brooklyn, who "wants better" for himself and his family. First two robbers appear and hold him up; then things take a turn for the better when broken-nosed Frank Alpine becomes his assistant. But there are complications: Frank, whose reaction to Jews is ambivalent, falls in love with Helen Bober; at the same time he begins to steal from the store. Like Malamud's best stories, this novel unerringly evokes an immigrant world of cramped circumstances and great expectations. Malamud defined the immigrant experience in a way that has proven vital for several generations of writers. "His best novel . . .The Assistant is as tightly written as a prose poem." --Morris Dickstein inLeopards in the Temple: The Transformation of American Fiction 1945-1970… (més)

The Assistant: A Novel This book must be really old (1957) by judging by both its tenor and setting.

Initially I found it almost sepia to read but persevered and finished it. I cannot say I enjoyed it and I cannot say that I didn't. I quite liked the metamorphosis of the character of the assistant but didn't like the fatalism that pervades the whole thing.

Well written but not much lost if you don't ever read this. ( )

Il libro si sviluppa sulla vita semplice e disperata di un ultimo raccontata con maestria tra il comico e la tragedia. La bellezza nella descrizione delle piccole semplici cose di una vita disperata è impareggiabile.Un racconto intimista affascinante. ( )

I read this book with a literary supplement helping me understand it, as the meaning seemed to be lost amidst the story, and I believe that this novel was simply not for me. The language read a little forced, dated, and waywardly. While it tried to focus on the characters, I found myself growing distracted and slightly irritated by the way that they approached things and dealt with their lives. Although this was on Time's Top 100 Books list, I felt as if it did not quite deserve that sort of literary aplomb. This was a disappointing read.

2 stars- barely. ( )

I very much enjoyed the writing style, and that we knew many of the characters, but not many details of their backstory. I was very interested in the content of the book and the fate of the characters. However, there were so many details I wish were better explained to those unfamiliar with Jewish History. I also felt there were too many unexpected and unbelievable incidents in the end. ( )

Excerpts from my original GR review (Sep 2009):
- This sharp story is chock full of layered psychological drama (which I like). Let's see - competing loyalties, prejudices, forgiveness, redemption, frailties and insecurities, desperate love. We humans are a mixed up lot. Malamud's story comes across very true, with themes that apply today much as in 1957. I think this derives from his skillful portrayal of imperfect humanity. He recognizes there are few absolutes - no one is unwaveringly honest; we all have weaknesses.
- When Frank (the 'assistant') enters the lives of grocer Morris Bober and family, we detect quickly that he is no saint. But he's had a rough go at his young life, and through hard work appears to reward Morris's trust in him. When new-style merchants open up nearby, the grocer's already tenuous business shrinks, and we learn all is not quite as it first seems with Frank. The author's fine use of shifting POV, giving voice to Ida Bober, daughter Helen, as well as Morris and Frank, drives the tension-filled narrative.
- To me, Frank's ungainly love for Helen stands out as the front story. The dynamics surrounding this relationship, from the Bober's traditionalist fears, to Frank's obsession and doubts, to Helen's indecisiveness, make for good reading. I don't wish to give more away. For anyone unfamiliar with Bernard Malamud, this is a worthwhile read. His characterizations, particularly their states of mind, are very well done. ( )
