The beginning reader genre needs more books like this featuring kids of color. Seven Black kids of varying shades each declare "I am born to be awesome!" and go on to list the things and activities they love that make them awesome. It ends with a question for the reader: "What ways are you awesome?" Nothing too corny or babyish to put off a worldly new reader; it's kids expressing the kinds of things all kids would say. ( )
