Things pick up straight after the events of the previous book. It's essential to read the series in order. Zoe and Maxime Dual POV. I liked that the Hero was mostly on the backfoot in this book. He retrieves the heroine as you expect after she has run but he is trying everything to make it work realising that if he wants a future with Zoe he needs a different approach. I thought the author did well showing us that the Hero, Maxime, didn't know how to love, with his messed up family it's not surprising but he does try but the things he does are not really an expression of love but of possession or control and he needs to learn to understand the difference. He's trying to grovel but seems to either not be able to or just not anyone else version of a grovel. He is just so incapable of translating his feelings. I liked that although Zoe realises she can't change her situation, she's stuck with Maxime, she keeps her feelings under control, even at times giving him a dose of his own medicine. She had sex with him but still didn't give in to him in other ways. There is some other woman drama, but no cheating or interest from the Hero in anyone else. No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine. It amazes me how such intelligent men can be fooled into not seeing the harm a scorned woman can cause. There is small other man drama. Before Maxime shows up Zoe goes on a date, to try to move on but it doesn't go well and nothing happens. There are links to the previous book in the series about the heroine's brother and the characters show up in this story and share in it. There is an epilogue and one for the previous couple too. I did feel that events took place then things were resolved between them very quickly, just with the heroine making certain realisations. I'm not sure if it was me but it seems abrupt to me. ?.... A dark Mafia romance My love is wasted like gemstones in the dust, walked over by an oblivious shoe. It takes many suffering years and layers of mountains to squeeze carbon into a precious stone. Now that I'm polished and hard like a diamond, he doesn't get to kick me back into the dirt. Men like him don't love women like me. They don't love. Period. But he made me. He'll live with me. Because diamonds are forever. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

This trilogy has been one of my most anticipated this year. Especially, this book with the way it ended on the last one. I wasn't sure if Maxime was going to be able to get in my good graces again or if he would get in Zoe's. What he was planning to do for "business" was a hard limit for me. I felt my heart break into little pieces for Zoe and understood why she had to escape. I would have been the same way. I couldn't have watched the person that I loved go about "business" that way nor could I have handled being a secret.
I enjoyed how this book was about finding redemption and seeking solace within the love. To say that it was not an easy thing for Maxime would be an understatement. He definitely had his work cut out for him and it was not something in his wheelhouse. I am pretty sure he had never had to work so hard at something. I liked that Zoe held him accountable and didn't just immediately kowtow into what he wanted and expected.
These were strong characters and I found myself loving them separately and together. This might not have started as a conventional love story but it was a love story just the same.
I highly recommend this whole trilogy. This was the perfect ending to the story. There were a few areas that I wish had been fleshed out more but it was almost perfect. ( )
