WHEN THE HORSES RIDE BY: CHILDREN IN THE TIMES OF WAR is a multicultural book that aims at the thoughts of children during war. It is a book that is made up of poems that speak or freedom, of hope, of fear, and of love. It shares thoughts from many different children of backgrounds from past wars and what they may have been thinking and feeling. The pictures in this book are done in a variety of ways. They each add meaning by connecting to the backgrounds of the different children being portrayed. I don't believe the poems would have as much meaning as they do with the pictures adding to the emotions. This book would be one that I used when talking about war to try and get children to see that there were many different wars and they all effected children the same. It would be good to have a group discussion, but also make a project out of it where the child had to create a project based upon one of the poems that he or she had chosen from this book.
