Tanguy is a gripping story, but unfortunately a real one, relating the life of a child --his own life in the end-- who run away from Spain to France after the war, for being deported to a concentration camp, first in France and then in Germany. Abandoned by his parents, in part due to the cirmcustances, he became an adult quite fast. His sorrows tought him not to hate and judge people, he has understanding almost for everything, while slowly he is becoming more and more apathetic, to the point that he would have left himself dying in a couple of occasions. His story is also somehow the story of Europe, the horror of wars, the fate and the sorrows of people, who are no longer behaving as human beings, just fighting against fortune to survive. A sad and tough novel, an awesome story worth to be read. The style of Michel del Castillo is clear and concise. The prose is quite good. I feel it is a book that seems to be overlooked to often. If you have not read it & can find a copy it would be well worth your while.
When internet searches first became available for books it was the first book for which I hunted. Before then it was impossible. It could only be found in libraris, having been published in 1958. ( )
