Love Eric Carle books! As usual, this book is filled with fantastic illustrations that captivate readers and listeners. This book teaches that just because someone, or something, does something different- it doesn't mean its wrong! ( )

I love this book for so many reasons. A few of the reasons are, the amazing art work, the endless possibilities of activities you can do around this book, The different animals in the book, and the lesson at the end of the book. The book teaches young children that everyone is different, just because the sloth is slow does not make him any lazier than another animal, sloths are just born to be slow. Another good lesson in the book shows you that sometimes taking things slow, can be peaceful. As an adult I have learned to relax and take things step by step and day by, so that lesson that Eric Carle shows in the book, really reached out to me on a personal level. I like how the back of the book, shows all the animals, because I could easily make that into an art activity and say I want every student to draw one of the animals, and I will teach them how to make it like Eric Carle, because I learned how to make Eric Carle drawing in my Art Class. My favorite part of the book was the ending when the sloth stated, "It is true that I am slow, quiet, and boring. I am relaxed and tranquil, and I like to live in peace, but I am not lazy." That quote was very powerful in showing that just because someone moves at a slower pace, that doesn't make them lazy. ( )

This is a nonfiction book that tells a story of a sloth being judged by a variety of animals for being "lazy" and "slow". In the end, the sloth finally tells the animals of the reasons why he is slow and lethargic. This would be a great informational book over sloths and how they are.

I liked this book for a variety of reasons but only gave it a three star rating because it didn't really excite me or give me that thought of, "wow a 1st or 2nd grader would really love this!" This book was essentially about a sloth who hung around in a tree all day and night and was considered "lazy" by all the other animals. The sloth ends the story with saying that he doesn't care what the other animals think of him because he's perfectly content with how he does things. One thing that I liked was the repetitive language of the book. For every three pages or so, the sentence on that page started with the same couple of words. For example, the first couple pages of the book started with the words "slowly, slowly, slowly..." and towards the end of the book, there would be different animals asking the sloth "why are you so..." with a different question each time. I liked the flow of the writing for this book because it gets the reader into a sort of pattern that can make it easier to read. I think the illustrations for this book were incredible as the pictures are very bright and vibrant. The ending of the book is where things went south in my opinion. The final page/sentence of the book is the sloth's response to all the other animals where he gives this long list of adjectives that most kindergarten or 1st graders would never be about to understand, let alone pronounce. Some of the adjectives the book uses are ones like lackadaisical, languid, dawdle, and stoic. I love the overall idea of the book in that, one should be happy with who they are but the final page is what made me give the book a three star rating. ( )
