"I've loved every one of Susanna's books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly's delicate touch with charactersâ??sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won't let go!"â??DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlander

In an intricate balance of past and present, Susanna Kearsley offers a story of French historical fiction full of breathless suspense, Gothic romance, and priceless treasure.

Emily Braden has stopped believing in fairy tales and happy endings. When her fascinating but unreliable cousin Harry invites her on a holiday to explore the legendary town of Chinon, France and promptly disappearsâ??well, that's Harry for you.

As Emily makes the acquaintance of Chinon and its people, she begins to uncover dark secrets beneath the charm. Legend has it that during a thirteenth-century siege of the castle that looms over the city, Queen Isabelle, child bride of King John, hid a "treasure of great price." And in the last days of the German occupation during World War II, there was another Isabelle living in Chinon, a girl whose love for an enemy soldier went tragically awry.

As the dangers of the past become disastrously real, Emily is drawn ever more deeply into a labyrinth of mystery as twisted as the streets and tunnels of the ancient town itself.

A tale that deftly examines the ripples of the past through the present, The Splendour Falls brings the romance of French history to life for fans of Diana Gabaldon, Kate Morton, and Kate Mosse.

Read a lot like an Agatha Christie book and not as good as the authors other works. ( )

Unfortunately, this novel didn't do it for me. I usually enjoy this author's novels but "The Splendour Falls" failed to deliver. While there was mystery, murder and romance, I found the romance forced and unbelievable and the mystery not that good. I also thought Emily wasn't a particularly likeable protagonist. She was too mousey for my liking.

Also, I was disappointed with the two historical sub-plots. I usually like the historical aspects Ms Kearsley weaves into her novels but neither was properly developed. I wanted to learn more about the two Isabellas. Overall, an unsatisfactory read. ( )

Sometimes when I feel a bit overwhelmed by the realities in life and too much serious literature, it is lovely to give my brain a rest with a Susanna Kearsley novel. This one is quite fun. I have never thought particularly of Mary Stewart when reading Kearsley, but this book reminded me of Stewart’s early romantic mysteries. Even if Kearsley denied the influence, I would not believe her.

Emily Bradon is meant to be on holiday with her cousin, Harry, in Chinon, France; Harry, however, fails to show. While Emily is alone at the hotel they have engaged, she meets a number of fellow tourists and several town inhabitants, among them two handsome and charming gentlemen. In true Mary Stewart fashion, we are sure one of them is a villain, but which? There has, of course, been a murder, Harry is missing, people are suspicious and there is an ancient mystery regarding a lost treasure. You get the drift…but as cliche as it sounds, it was fun and clever and enchanting.

Now, back to the reading list.
