A man trapped in a millionare's deadly game of political and sexual betrayal Filled with shocks and chilling surprises, The Magus is a masterwork of contemporary literature. In it, a young Englishman, Nicholas Urfe, accepts a teaching position on a Greek island where his friendship with the owner of the islands most magnificent estate leads him into a nightmare. As reality and fantasy are deliberately confused by staged deaths, sensual encounters, and terrifying violence, Urfe becomes a desperate man fighting for his sanity and his life. A work rich with symbols, conundrums and labrinthine twists of event, The Magus is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, a work that ranks with the best novels of modern times.… (més)

Somewhere I picked up a suggestion on reading this book. I am not a big reader of fiction, but decided to give it a shot. I opted for the audio version as I could listen while I was working. Quite long at 26 hours, as the book weighs in at about 600+ pages.

The book follows the twists and turns of Nicholas Urfe as he embarks upon a venture teaching in Greece and encounters supposedly the Magus, Maurice Conchis, on the islands. The background plays out with his love relationships with several women and somehow or other relate to his encounters and the mystery of Conchis. Good luck in deciphering because the book although interesting at times weaves back and forth without any clear cut conclusion that I could decipher. It left me wondering if I missed something quite deep here, the message or the way to enlighten my life. It didn't. I must have missed it. ( )

This is the third time I've started this book and I finally finished AND I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL. First I'm seduced by the promise of MYSTERY, the allure of a SATYR SEEN THROUGH THE TREES, the thrill of a PSYCHIC LABYRINTH, then I am disappointed by long, colorless conversations. THEN I am again baited to keep reading by a "SQUAT SUCCUBUS WITH A BOSCH-LIKE SNOUT" (his words! not mine!!) and FINALLY I am left undecided: is this the best book I've ever read or the worst? I'm going to split the difference and say that this book could be about five hundred pages shorter. ( )

I liked it a lot. If you like hyper-erudite mystery you should read it (the tone and setting were catnip from the start). Reading it now seems really different from reading it near its release. I loathed the protagonist, but ID'd with many of his facets.

Anything else is a spoiler. Do not read any summaries or reviews. Just read it. ( )

I loved this book when I read it while backpacking in the 80's. I read it again in the 90's and must be due a revisit some time soon! I don't get many of the literary/mythological allusions but still find it tantalizing and enthralling. ( )

File this one away with The Secret History in ‘Cult Hits I Don’t Care For’. Fowles’ writing is excellent, but when you prefer the off-island stuff in a novel that mainly takes place on an island, it’s not going to be much fun... ( )

I was born in 1927, the only child of middle-class parents, both English, and themselves born in the grotesquely elongated shadow, which they never rose sufficiently above history to leave, of that monstrous dwarf Queen Victoria.

I acquired expensive habits and affected manners.  I got a third class degree and a first class illusion: that I was a poet.
Men see objects, women see the relationship between objects. ... It is an extra dimension of feeling we men are without and one that makes war abhorrent to all real women – and absurd. ... War is a psychosis caused by an inablity to see relationships.
This is true of all collecting. It extinguishes the moral instinct. The object finally possesses the possessor.
