Several students in Mrs Ruler's class are misbehaving and being mean in class. Mrs Ruler talks to them about how kindness is cooler than mean behavior, and says she wants them to try doing ten kind acts. David doesn't feel like being kind, and doesn't try very hard. Over the next few days the children tell Mrs Ruler about the acts of kindness that they've been doing at home. This soon becomes a classroom project, and Mrs Ruler writes down all of the acts of kindness on paper hearts. David struggles with being nice, but is finally able to do kind deeds by saving some Gerbils running around the classroom. The class decides to do community kindness.

Lesson: How Can I Be A Good Helper At School?

I really wanted to like this book because of the concept, but I just couldn't like neither the text (which is sometimes partly in rhyme) nor the pictures. I'm typically okay ywith busy pictures, but these just weren't all that interesting and didn't always illustrate the text all that much. I did like the individual pictures of acts of kindess, at least some of them, but in general I didn't think the book was all that inspired. ( )
