The first sentence says that "you can ask the ocean to bring you something." It gives you a sense that the ocean acts as some kind of god to the protagonist of this story. This child puts all the trust that they have into the ocean that they've received from their mother and it hasn't failed them yet. It could be some kind of symbolism their, but I could also be stretching a bit. Excellent book to have when you introduce the sea/ocean. When you read this book you'll be walking along the ocean shore, looking for all kinds of special things. Some will be small enough to fit in your hand--like shells and sea glass. Others--like the sun and the sky and the waves--will be too big to carry home. But no matter what your journey holds, you'll soon learn that looking for the ocean's treasures can be as important as finding them.
