Although some tips and tricks found in this second edition of The New Professional Image are a bit outdated- animal prints aren’t all that ‘classic’ anymore and fitted spaghetti strap dresses aren’t typically appropriate formalwear- the majority of the general guidelines and fitting and a good place to begin for individuals looking to reassess their career-wear style choices. The book notes that within 30 seconds someone meeting you will assess your education level, career competence, personality, level of sophistication, trustworthiness, sense of humor and social heritage. This is all from a first impression! Good grooming, appropriate garments, self-confidence and comfort can instantly improve your chances to get a job and can even increase your success within that job. A particularly interesting anecdote discusses how a telemarketing company decided to enforce a more professional dress code, and within a period of four to six months, sales increased by about 20 percent. This is in a company that whose clients never actually saw the employees! The book is sensitive to six, coloring and philosophy. It is not a style guide for fashionistas, but a simple professional guide written to address common misperceptions and mistakes. I would recommend skimming this book for sure.
