—Ruby and the Romantics Toward dawn we shared with you your hour of desolation, the hugh lingering passion of your unearthly outcry, as you swung your blind head toward us and laboriously opened a bloodshot, glistening eye, in which we swam with terror and recognition.

In one of my earliest memories, my mother and I are on the front porch of our rented Carter Avenue house watching two delivery men carry our brand-new television set up the steps. I'm excited because I've heard about but never seen television. The men are wearing work clothes the same color as the box they're hefting between them. Like the crabs at Fisherman's Cove, they ascend the cement stairs sideways. Here's the undependable part: my visual memory stubbornly insists that these men are President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon. | |

Wow, looking at the reviews here, I haven't seen this much attacking of a book since Twilight.
I find Wally Lamb a great writer. Many times in the book he would jab you in the funny bone from out of nowhere. I love how he he thrust the reader in the middle of episodes leaving the reader to imagine how things might have happened. Solid 4 stars there.
Now, I'm not overweight, female, and my lone whale watching expedition was rained out (and the boat didn't go out). Without spoiling the book, let's say there are a lot of things Dolores Price experienced that I have no idea what they are like so it would impossible for me to rate how Wally Price related to an overweight girl.
In fact, I cared little for Dolores. In the beginning, she was more just a train wreck as the first guest in a Jerry Springer episodes. Then the mess got messier. She become even more undone. And at arm's length, I continued to watch and wondered where she going and doing.
The book felt like a triathlon as I kept glancing when the train wreck would end. It's a healthy sized book though not anything that I would ask anyone go follow me though.
