[from Library Journal] "In this oversized title, Holmes and eight collaborators discuss the different "ages" of warfare and the various military inventions that characterize them. The idea is good but the writing sometimes is uneven; a few chapters stress history and politics more than weaponry and tactics. Coverage is best on the world wars but skimpy on the pre-gundpowder and nuclear eras. Numerous information boxes and cutaway drawings range from good to exquisite, leaving the reader wishing for more. Appealing to both general readers and YAs, this is a good buy for public libraries.
