Overall Score: 3.5/5*
The Bogeyman: 3/5 - Creepy yet annoying main character (maybe it was the way the narrator choose to read him) that I couldn't get past. This caused a lower rating. There wasn't much detail or fluff in this story.
I Know What You Need: 4.25/5 - I liked the characters and the creepy aspect to this story. Minus the "magic" aspect, I liked how closely similar this story could be to things still in our society. People don't always realize who people really are and unfortunately our need for constant connection to others through social media could potentially create problems like those seen in "I Know What you Need". I found myself zoning out at times while listening though.
Strawberry Spring: 4.5/5 - I really liked the "realness" of this story. I kind of saw the twist coming, but still thought it was really good. I would love to see this story fleshed out a little more in a novella format... to know how things are triggered, etc.
The Woman in the Room: 3.5/5 - This one really made me think about what I would do if someone I loved was in the same condition as the character's mom was. I didn't really feel all that connected to any of the characters though so didn't enjoy this story as much as I would have liked.
Battleground: 2/5 - Even though this story was action packed, I really didn't "get" it. I know lots of these shorts stories have magical or unrealistic aspects to them, but I just really couldn't understand the magical/sci fi parts of this story. I liked the action, but couldn't get past the little toy soldiers that were alive. I think I also needed a little more background in this story to understand who sent the box and why.
Gray Matter: 3/5 - Once again, I really didn't feel like I could connect with any characters which ended up making this story feel a little flat for me. It also felt like it ended very abruptly. I did like the science fiction aspect to this story... Couldn't tell you why I was able to accept this one, but not Battleground.
The Graveyard Shift: 4/5 - This one was good, but for some reason I was zoning out for a while here and there while listening. I couldn't figure out (through the zones) if the main character was young or old. I thought from the beginning that he was older, but he keeps getting called "college boy" which left me thinking he was actually younger. I liked the creepy aspect of this story because it was so realistic, however, I also felt as though this one ended quite abruptly as well.
The Man Who Loved Flowers: 5/5 - Loved this one. I didn't quite see it coming even though we are pretty much told (not out-rightly though) in the first several sentences who our main character is. This story felt very nicely rounded and even though we don't really get to know any of the characters very well, it felt suitable and well rounded.
The Last Rung on the Ladder: 4.5/5 - I could totally relate to the majority of this story having grown up out in the country. All the emotions felt throughout this story felt very real to me and I felt very invested throughout the story. I didn't quite see the ending coming though.
Night Surf: 1/5 - I really couldn't tell you what this story was about if I hadn't looked it up again. I had no clue that this story was supposed to be post-apocalyptic. I couldn't get into really anything about this story. The main character felt like a dick, his girlfriend was a whiner and the only part that really stood out to me (which I still couldn't figure out if it was real while listening to it) was that a group of teens burned a man on a pyre as an offering to some "gods" so they wouldn't get sick. Maybe if I had gone into it knowing a bit more, I would have felt a little more something for it.
Jerusalem's Lot: 4/5 -
The Lawnmower Man: 3/5 -
The Mangler: /5 -
Quitters, Inc.: 4.75/5 -
The Ledge: 4.25/5 -
Sometimes They Come Back: 3.5/5 -

Very good collection from Stephen King. The first of his collections I've read in fact. The first story, 'Jerusalem's Lot' was my absolute favourite without any shadow of a doubt, and it was a nice touch to find that another of the stories here features Jerusalem's Lot too. Only two of stories in this collection didn't really do much for me, 'The Ledge' and 'The Woman in the Room'. Still, you always expect a few to not quite grab you, so for it to be only two in this instance was pretty damned good as far as I'm concerned.

Very good collection.

Well it seems that I don't have the shelves to properly cover my horror/gore reading habit. I need to create a whole new account to cover all the non-romance/urban fantasy/chick-lit/new adult/pnr/smut books that I tend to read.

I tend to yo-yo between horror fiction and romance genres. As far as horror goes, I cut my teeth on Stephen King as a kid and have been reading and re-reading his books ever since. I can always pick up one of his books that I have read multiple times.

This particular book is classic King when he was still kind of new. This anthology contains a little bit of everything.

Sci-fi- when the astronaut comes back with an "extra" passenger who is slowly taking him over. See the cover of this edition for a hint.

Gore- When a dad cracks open a cold one that tastes "off", he begins to drastically change not only his eating habits but his entire form.

Supernatural- what happens when modern day substitutes of an old world demon summoning spell accidentally finds their way onto (and into) a behemoth of a factory sheet presser.

Coming of Age- a college aged "Mr. Too-perfect" has a secret way of making sure his girlfriend gets whatever she needs exactly when she doesn't even know she needs it.

Horror- when the "Boogeyman" is real and Mom and Dad won't believe.

Contemporary - Quitters Inc. makes sure that those who join, never smoke again...no matter what.

Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Seriously this is a great book for when you need a little something to keep you occupied for short bursts, but it is good enough to read in one sitting. Sure its "old" but the stories and themes are timeless!

I feel a reread coming on. ( )

The stories range from good to great. So many fun ideas, from killer trucks, to killer companies that help you quit smoking, to killer naked lawn care workers who eat grass while quoting Pan. ( )

It is December 2020 and I picked this up after a good friend recommended it. I started reading and got to the story 'Night Surf' - utterly freaked out, by how close elements of that story are to the current Covid19 SARS2 pandemic. I admit that it rattled me a little. Thank goodness we didn't get quite as far as the characters in the story.
The stories are all strong stories - I have come across some of them before, but not all.
Apart from one item of language (we don't use the 'r' word) that needs to be updated for today, but was accurate for the time, they still stand their ground in the current day.
