The first in the trilogy of His Dark Materials, this is an introduction to Lyra and the start of her adventures in search of Lord Asriel and the unlikely friends she meets along the way. Her resilience and determination to do what is right, whatever the cost to herself is endearing. The innocence and honesty of childhood against the corruption and hatred of her world.

I liked Lyra and felt she was shouldering a responsibility too great for her. Her journey and the friends she makes who pitch in to help her are lovely. It shows the power of friendship. Told in a frank and honest way, all the characters are well developed and Lyra's friends are ones you come to love as she does. They all show her courage, wisdom, trust and love, so you know that she is not actually alone. With all the adventure and dangers she encounters there is plenty of variety and never a dull moment. This was my first option for 2020 PopSugar Reading Prompt: a book with "gold", "silver" or "bronze" in the title, but I wanted to finish a shorter book (The Silver Collar by Kate Pocalini).

I was not satisfied with the latter, so I decided to continue reading this.
It's worth it!
Looking forward to read the sequels next year. ( )

I don't know how I missed reading this as a child. I enjoyed this so much and I can't imagine how magical it would have been if I'd read it as a child. ( )

Initial Review: Intrigued me until the end, but with how child abuse and the religious themes in this book, I'm wary of continuing the series.

Thoughts Thirteen Years Later:

I never did read more. Coming-of-age stories of a frequently deceptive orphan Chosen One who travels with the help of a humanlike animal to save the world from spiritual ruin are deeply steeped in religious culture, making the claims that this is an "anti-religious" book confusing. Isn't this a fairy tale told from a religious viewpoint? A new mix of mythology?

I've read that the series was meant to be subversive and anti-religious. That doesn't align with my interpretation of the story, which read as no more subversive than reviving fantasies from 19th Century Christian writers would be today, at least in the USA where any story featuring magic and witches can inspire political protests. Pullman's use of tropes didn't feel as original to me as perhaps they would have if I had read the book in childhood; although, I doubt I would have wanted to read about the story's conversion camps then. The story felt oblivious to its real-life equivalents, as if the dangers are only fantasy, and that's incredibly frustrating.

The way Pullman fictionalized marginalized peoples who have in real-life been forcibly Christianized without addressing that history rubs me the wrong way, too. The polar bears (a mix of RL animals that are dying off with Native stereotypes) and Romagyptians are all just there to help the child of wealthy nobles from the dominant religious order bring holy power back into the world. (I feel that was better handled in the TV show The Mysterious Cities of Gold.)

Maybe one day I'll reread and better appreciate THE GOLDEN COMPASS by trying to read it either as a horror story or a Unitarian fantasy. For now, I'll continue looking for books I can enjoy with my child. ( )

This book was so fun and I don't know why it's taken me this long to start this series! ( )

As always, Pullman is a master at combining impeccable characterizations and seamless plotting, maintaining a crackling pace to create scene upon scene of almost unbearable tension. This glittering gem will leave readers of all ages eagerly awaiting the next installment of Lyra's adventures.

Into this wild abyss,
The womb of nature and perhaps her grave,
Of neither sea, not shore, nor air, nor fire,
But all these in their pregnant causes mixed
Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight,
Unless the almighty maker them ordain,
His dark materials to create more worlds,
Into this wild abyss the wary fiend
Stood on the brink of hell and looked a while,
Pondering his voyage...

We are all subject to the fates. But we must all act as if we are not...or die of despair.
...this was in the seventeenth century.  Symbols and emblems were everywhere. Buildings and pictures were designed to be read like books.  Everything stood for something else.; if you had the right dictionary you could read Nature itself.
