Nice collection of mostly Italian (or so it seems) folk stories retold by a favorite anthologist. A few have disturbing themes about obedience or fate, etc., but many are funny. The author's voice is one some readers will not like - it's that old-fashioned nursery tale style that has skipping and clapping w/joy and asides to the reader... I happen to like it, in small doses. The illustrations are attractive, but they don't actually do much to enhance the stories. ( )
