The genre of this book is historical fiction or biography. This book tells the story of Allen Jay, a young boy at the time of the story, who helps his father hide and smuggle a runaway slave. Allen goes through many emotions in this story: fear, relief, happiness, and shock. I might use this book to help in a writing prompt or project in a 3rd or 4th grade classroom. ( )

Characterization, plot, setting: The plot of this story is there is a runaway slave who was treated very poorly and has run away from his master.
Review: This is a good example of historical fiction becasue a story like this could have actually taken place during the civil war. Allen Jay comes face to face with a slave who has recently run away from his master and Allen is faced with the difficult task of bringing the slave to his grandfathers home miles away in the nighttime hours risking both their lives.
