S'està carregant… The Death of Sweet Mister (2001)de Daniel Woodrell

Still a five even though knowing the ending takes away the punch. A favorite. Will probably read again a few years. More great writing from Daniel Woodrell. I didn't like it quite as much as Winter's Bone and Tomato Red - two books that would be hard to top in any case. But the more I think about this book, the more I appreciate it. Maybe it's the lack of any truly sympathetic character that makes it a little harder to 'like', as opposed to appreciate. "The Death of Sweet Mister" was a dark tale that drew me in from the start. The best comparison is trying not to gape at an accident. I tried not to stare but couldn't help myself. The events of Shrug's adolescence in the 1960's were remarkable. A person would hope they never have the same experiences. I remain intentionally vague to avoid spoilers. Yet, I'd like to know if anyone thinks our environment is culpable for our later behaviors? Reader's Digest claimed this author to be one of the great but unknown contemporary writers so I gave the recommended book a read. I don't care how well written it was, or intellectually stimulating or southern depicting, or crafted to perfection, and it was all these, any book that depicts a father-like figure that bullies the son and brings him up like Fagan did Oliver Twist only to be dismembered my his wife who is then raped in incest by said son is just not a great book. Shug Akins is a lonely, overweight thirteen-year-old boy. His mother, Glenda, is the one person who loves him-she calls him Sweet Mister and attempts to boost his confidence and give him hope for his future. Shuggie's purported father, Red, is a brutal man with a short fuse who mocks and despises the boy. Into this small-town Ozarks mix comes Jimmy Vin Pearce, with his shiny green T-bird and his smart city clothes. When he and Glenda begin a torrid affair, a series of violent events is inevitably set in motion. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
