The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads--so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the white killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler, who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vicepresident of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-head honcho of the Universe; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox. How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert "universal" Armageddon and save life as we know it--and don't know it!… (més)

Year Zero de Rob Reid (Aula)
Aula: Nick Carter (not the Backstreet Boy) is a copyright lawyer who's visited by aliens who claim that the earth is in danger of being destroyed due to the universal (literally) popularity of its music. Similar humor to Adams' novels, well-plotted, and well-written.

First the Earth was blown up to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Now the inhabitants of the planet Krikkit are intent on collecting all of the elements that make up the Wikkit Gate, and so destroy the entire universe. The Krikkitmen are slightly Dalek-y in their desire to destroy all creatures who are not of Krikkit. The showdown for the universe unfolds, at least in part, at Lord’s Cricket Ground, with Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, and Zaphod Beeblebrox all playing roles. And Slartibartfast, of course. Can’t forget about him!

This is the third of the original Hitchhiker’s trilogy and actually began life as a Doctor Who story for Tom Baker called Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen (which James Goss has adapted into a novel). It’s a meandering story, which can either be a bug or a feature, depending on your mood or preference. I was more receptive to it this time around, but of course the original Hitchhiker’s Guide is always going to be the best ( )

Just brilliant ( )

it was good, but not as good as the Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Of course, Martin Freeman is still brilliant.
I am definitely going to listen to the others in the series, but I decided to take a break first.. ( )

Absolutely lovely as I recall. Someday I'll have to read it again, so I can write a review. ( )

In a lot of ways, this book is a lot better than Restaurant at the End of the Universe simply because it has a lot more regular plot action and better-defined enemies despite all the Timey-Wimey stuff that comes necessarily with being a hitchhiker.

Things I've learned:

Arthur Dent is a mass murderer. Or a slightly scattered universal-sequential murderer. Or maybe he's just tactless.

Cricket, or rather, the planet Krikkit is full of a bunch of a-holes.

And I've also learned that I REALLY, REALLY don't want to know the truth.

Which is, when you think about it, completely absurd since I'm going to keep reading the series, and it is filled with NOTHING BUT THE UNVARNISHED TRUTH.

On a side note, I do want to mention that I teared up a little bit when I learned how to fly. Again. And I mean not the teary-eyed kind that comes from cooking some onions with olive oil, but tears of sheer amazement that I've always been flying wrong.

And to think that walking was just a bastard version of the same thing: put one foot forward, fall, and fail to hit the ground. Huh. Amazing. ( )

Adams delights in cosmic pratfalls, and if he sometimes loses track of his narrative, he more than makes up for it by confirming what many have suspected all along: "He learned to communicate with birds and discovered that their conversation was fantastically boring. It was all to do with wind speed, wingspans, power-to-weight ratios and a fair bit about berries."

[Book 3 Only] "Life, the Universe and Everything" is the title of the third in a series of novels (as well as the third in a series of radio dramas). All Works in the series are generally referred to as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" or "The Hitchhiker Trilogy", as is the series of radio dramas. Though there are unabridged audio recordings of these works, the radio dramas are considerably different from the printed works. Eoin Colfer, of "Artemis Fowl" fame, wrote the sixth volume of the "Trilogy," And Another Thing ... (2009).
