( ![]() I know when a book is five-stars for is when even though I want to find out what will happen at the end of the story, at the same time, I don't want the book to end. But this time, I am lucky because Garden Spells has a sequence that I am looking forward to my own soon and whatever Sarah Addison Allen has written and will write. It's well written with great characterization, and it really gives a flavor of small-town life, both with its frustrations and joys. The story is both complex and simple all at once, and it's not really a love story; it's about two sisters who come to learn the truth of who they really are. The magical realism is perfectly handled with just a small touch here, and there that's never so bold as to make the story unreal but just strong enough to give it that sunshine glow. I really enjoyed the apple tree that chucked apples at people, and the idea of making cakes with herbs to help other problems is a good one. Not my cup of rose-petal tea, I guess. Claire Waverley relies on the sameness and comfort of her home in Bascom, North Carolina, where she leverages her family's gifts with plants to create dishes and drinks that have magical effects on those who consume them. Her carefully-constructed shell begins to crack when her younger sister, Sydney, returns to Bascom after years away, this time with a daughter in tow. Simultaneously, an art instructor moves into the house beside the Waverley one, and upon (inadvertently) eating a magical apple from the tree that grows in the Waverley garden, he becomes absolutely smitten with Claire. The story has a strong romance focus, for both Claire and Sydney, as well as exploring the sisters' relationships with each other, their past, and the town. I really enjoyed the cast of characters in this book--the magical realism here worked pretty well for me, and I loved reading about the different talents that various families had and how those gifts interacted. I don't think that this was earth-shattering by any means, but I had a good time reading it. The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures. A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants--from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys--except for Claire's rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before. When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire's quiet life is turned upside down--along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy--if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom--or with each other. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
