Mr King and I have long since come to a parting of the ways, but I was avoiding the Dark Tower series long before that, believing that his 'fantasy' books weren't for me. And look at that, I was right! Maybe the sequels improve with practice, and King has already rewritten the first volume (which didn't help), but I'm out. Too much macho, pseudo-classical 'palaver' for my taste, with themes and characters that were handled better in The Stand. ( ![]() I tried, I really did. I like some of King's work, but this one isn't for me. Somewhat depressing but highly original and well-written. I am not quite sure how I feel about this one. As always, King writes in a way that draws you in and eager for more. But there is an uncertainty throughout the whole book. It is clearly the start of an epic journey but there are so many unanswered questions of the past, the future, and even what world it takes place in. At this point, it feels a little confusing and unsatisfying but there is just enough information to keep you curious enough to want to keep following Rowland and see how it ends up. If it was a stand alone novel, I would hate it. But knowing it is just the first in a series of a long epic, you have to consider it as just a long introduction to what will hopefully be an exciting adventure. What a horrible way to start a series. I could only get to page a 110 before I decided I didn't want to waste my tme with this book. I had heard before that this book wasn't as good as the actual series but... I was on page 110 an I still didn't know what the purpose of the character was, why he was following the black man or what the heck was going on with the dead people who weren't dead.
