Fantasy. Fiction. Literature. Thriller. HTML:The third volume in the #1 nationally bestselling Dark Tower Series, involving the enigmatic Roland (the last gunfighter) and his ongoing quest for the Dark Tower, is "Stephen King at his best" (School Library Journal).
Several months have passed since The Drawing of the Three, and in The Waste Lands, Roland's two new tet-mates have become trained gunslingers. Eddie Dean has given up heroin, and Odetta's two selves have joined, becoming the stronger and more balanced personality of Susannah Dean. But Roland altered ka by saving the life of Jake Chambers, a boy who??in Roland's world??has already died. Now Roland and Jake exist in different worlds, but they are joined by the same madness: the paradox of double memories. Roland, Susannah, and Eddie must draw Jake into Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Beam all the way to the Dark Tower. There are new evils...new dangers to threaten Roland's little band in the devastated city of Lud and the surrounding wastelands, as well as horrific confrontations with Blaine the Mono, the piratical Gasher, and the frightening Tick-Tock Man.

The Dark Tower Series continues to show Stephen King as a master of his craft. What lands, what peoples has he visited that are so unreachable to us except in the pages of his incredible books? Now Roland's strange odyssey continues. The Waste Lands follows The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three as the third volume in what may be the most extraordinary and imaginative cycle of tales in the English lan

1.75 stars. this was okay for what it was, but much of it was less than what it could be, and less than what he can do. there were specific things that he's done in other earlier books that he did better than here. (for example the whole riddle and train thing felt so poorly written. there was no tension and all the places he wanted me to be turning the pages because i couldn't tear my eyes from the page i was turning them just to get to the end.) and i hated the way he used sex, especially with susannah and the demon. that entire scene enraged me.. that in particular, but really all the parts of the book that were supposed to be high-octane felt to me like a teenage boy's fantasy. everything else in the book was better, and so raises this up for me, but the crucial parts of this one were mostly just annoying to me (or worse). i'm hoping we can move on to better things in the next one. i'm also starting to really question what the first book is needed for. obviously a couple of things but the premise - chasing the man in black - is starting to feel contrary to roland's real objective of finding the dark tower.... 4.5/5

Another great installment to the series. I would argue my favorite so far, and one of Kings best writings. I absolutely love the exploration of this post apocalyptic world that happens in the second half of the story.

But that doesn’t mean that the first half, and this books “Drawing”, where dull moments. Finally we get to see more emotional depth developing from our supporting characters, as well as their importance in the story. I love Eddie’s part in the drawing. His character needed the attention, and Stephen King did not drop the ball. I wasn’t exactly thrilled about the entire carving process, but the connections between our New York and his world that were created from the ‘carving’ was great.

After the fourth Drawing of the series, the book starts to take off with learning about the lore of this world, and I believe that’s why I liked it much more than the previous two. Many answers were given; to questions I didn’t even know I had. But at the same time we are left with dozens more budding up through the mess that was this books ending. A chaotically fun mess that ends in a cliff hanger, but a mess still.

On to the Fourth! ( )

A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,

And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,

And the dry stone no sound of water. Only

There is shadow under this red rock,

(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),

And I will show you something different from either

Your shadow in the morning striding behind you

Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;

I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

-- T.S. Eliot

"The Waste Land"
If there pushed any ragged thistle-stalk

Above its mates, the head was chopped; the bents

Were jealous else. What made those holes and rents

In the dock's hearth swarth leaves, bruised as to balk

All hop of greenness? 'tis a brute must walk

Pashing their life out, with a brute's intents.

-- Robert Browning

"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came"
"What river is it?" enquired Millicent idly.

"It's only a stream. Well, perhaps a little more than that. It's called the Waste."

"Is it really?"

"Yes," said Winifred, "it is."

The house was alive. He knew this, could feel its awareness reaching out from the boards and the slumping roof, could feel it pouring in rivers from the black sockets of its windows. The idea of approaching that terrible place filled him with dismay; the idea of actually going inside filled him with inarticulate horror.
