Sachar captures adolescence in this contemporary realistic fiction novel. Stanley has always thought his family has bad luck, but one day he becomes really unlucky when he is forced to go to Camp Green Lake, it seems like a better option then jail. He chooses the camp after being accused of stealing an athlete's donated shoes.

At Camp Green Lake Stanley learns what it is like to be truly unlucky and what it feels like to dig a hole everyday all day. In this novel the reader lives through two different stories that come together to prove why Stanley has always felt unlucky. ( )

This novel follows the unlucky events in an unlucky boy's life. Intertwined in Stanley Yelnats misadventures is the story of Stanley's great-great grandfather and the story of Katherine Barlow. This book has something for everyone: humor, mystery, real-life troubles, and adventure. This easy read is a great way to help reluctant readers engage in a story. The easy language, contemporary surroundings, and relatable characters make it easy for readers to recreate the story's images in their heads. If you enjoy this book, check out the two other books in this series. This book won the Newberry Medal.

Holes is a fantastic story of adventure, legends, digging holes, and, of course, a little bad luck. Stanley Yelnats had grown up around bad luck his entire life, but after a pair of stolen shoes falls on his head and he’s arrested for the crime he never committed, his bad luck escalates. Stanley is sent to a camp for troublemakers where they dig holes, all day and every day. Soon, he befriends a boy named Zero who is the outcast within the group. Suddenly, tragedy strikes and Zero runs off into the desert, only to have Stanley chase after him the next day. On their adventure in the desert, they learn that the camp for boys isn’t all that it seems. ( )

I first read Holes when I was in the fifth grade and have loved it ever since. This novel had such a huge impact on me that I still quote it to this day. Holes is centered on an unlucky teenage boy named Stanley Yelnats who is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention center in a desert in Texas, after being falsely accused of theft. This story puts the reader in Stanley's shoes and takes them on a journey through the life of a juvenile at Camp Green Lake. The reader is able to truly see what it is like to dig holes all day in the Texas summer heat. Holes teaches the importance of friendship, history in everyday life, cruelty vs. kindness, justice, man vs. nature, and the power of fate to determine events. I could incorporate Holes into any core lesson (math, science, social studies, or reading), which is why I chose to include this book in my library. I desire to draw math lessons, such as percentages, ratios, proportions, and word problems from this novel because I believe it would help keep my students engaged and would be a fun learning activity for them. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to dig up the truth or wants to experience an adventure that is right around the corner-- or just under your feet!
“When you spend your whole life living in a hole, the only way you can go is up. (Zero/Hector Zeroni)”
“You have only one life, make the most of it”

As somebody from Texas, this was one of my all time favorite books, and the film adaptation was subsequently added to my list of favorite movies. The story follows an inherently unlucky teenage boy named Stanley who is sent to a juvenile labor camp, where he discovers a mystery that eventually leads to him uncovering a hidden truth that connects him and a fellow camper’s ancestral destinies.
