Being a vampire for him meant revenge. Revenge against life itself. Every time he took a life it was revenge. It was no wonder, then, that he appreciated nothing. The nuances of vampire existence weren’t even available to him because he was focused with a maniacal vengeance upon the mortal life he’d left. Consumed with hatred, he looked back. Consumed with envy, nothing pleased him unless he could take it from others; and once having it, he grew cold and dissatisfied, not loving the thing for itself; and so he went after something else. I’ll be fully honest here and say I read this after watching the AMC series. I know they changed a lot of things, so I don’t think I can judge this book in any way. A big part of why I liked the series was that it had such a wonderful story about Louis struggling with humanity, race and queerness. Book Louis is a plantation owner who kills his slaves. Welp. Another thing I liked about the series was Louis, Lestat and Claudia’s family dynamic, and those were my favourite parts of the book. The author created an extremely dysfunctional family and I love them both in print and on screen. These three are terrible together, but being apart is even worse. Over all I guess I’m too 2022 to fully love this book from the 70s, but I definitely see why this is such an iconic piece of fiction. I vaguely remember reading some of this book years and years ago but never finishing for reasons I don't remember. Overall it's a good book, but maybe not for everyone. I think this book shines best in the second half - there's more action, more mystery, more emotion. The first half is sort of long winded, the characters aren't terribly likeable, and it suddenly jumps into extremely blurred lines between admiration for a child's beauty and pedophilic remarks. But really, I'll pick up the second book because the ending of this one was so strong and heartening, and with the feeling that it'll be someone's redemption arc. I want to know what happens! In short, if you like vampires, and a bit of mystery, and everything being described in an erotic manner, including but not limited to: candles, beds, dresses, corpses, fingers, eyes, platonic love, nostalgia, children, mirrors, breasts, young men, sewage, nightly ambiance, etc. Then I highly suggest this book. The first time I've read these books, I was too immature to really appreciate them. Since then, I've reread the first six books (well, minus the abomination that is MTD) a couple of times, and I have to say that this is still my absolutely favorite series about vampires, despite the hefty dose of religious themes... I'm sure I will read this again sometime.
The author's seriousness is honest, I think, but misplaced; perhaps a bit more Grand Guignol elegance was called for father than incessant philosophizing. Immersed in the book's fetid, morbid atmosphere - like being in a hothouse full of decaying funeral lilies - one longs to get out in the garden. I'm glad I reread the book but have no desire to keep going with the series.
