"The Vampire Lestat" is the second book in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and arguably the best of the lot. Like "Interview with the Vampire" I read "Lestat" when I was around 17 y/o. After "Interview" I was hooked, and this book served to hook me even further whilst opening my mind to philosophical ideas that I had never considered before. And as good as it was - the first time around - I didn't really "get it" back then. This time round I see it's incredible beauty, not only in the story, but the prose, and the magnificence of it.

In the first book, we're introduced to Louis, a vampire who tells of his time with "Lestat" the vampire who made him. In that book, Lestat is the antagonist of the tale, among others, and I remember when I saw this book, I couldn't help but think what Anne Rice was thinking - writing from the perspective of the "bad guy". But really, that's what makes Lestat such an awesome character. He IS bad. He IS evil. And he relishes in it. Furthermore, the story of Louis, Lestat, and Claudia's time together as told my Louis in "Interview" was merely one person's/vampires perspective on what happened. And, as we all know, there are two sides to every story. So, if you're interested in reading this one, know that your perception of Lestat's motivations are explained sufficiently to see from his perspective. By then (towards the end of the book) you won't care anyway. You'll be so in love with Lestat that he could do anything and you'll be on-board with it.

Whilst many have seen or read "Interview" and spoilers didn't matter too much, for the remaining books in the Chronicles I want to keep the spoilers to myself - you need to read this book (and the others) without knowing too much.

In "Lestat" our main character awakens from a long slumber, buried in the back yard of his house in New Orleans in 1984. A number of things wake him up, but one of those is the music from a local rock band called "Satan's Night Out". Lestat decides he wants to join them, but more, he wants to be a global rock star!

As apart of his plan he also decides to write an autobiography (which is this book!) under the pseudonym "Anne Rice". Very very clever. After all, the first book in the series also shared the same pseudonym so why not play to the idea of Lestat's and Louis story being fiction, rather than fact. Or fact, rather than fiction? Confused? Doesn't matter. You'll love this book, nonetheless.

Lestat and Louis couldn't be any different from one another. Louis is more human than vampire. He doesn't flaunt his powers, in fact, he doesn't seem to have any. He doesn't appreciate what he's been given; immortality, freedom. Instead he hates himself and considers himself to be evil.

Lestat on the other hand embraces his immortality, his powers, his life, and thrives on being evil. When I say evil though, I mean "naughty"... For, anyone who kills humans and drinks their blood is inherently "evil", but thriving and "living" and enjoying the life that Lestat has been brought into makes him an endearing character, and one you'll enjoy coming back to again and again. Lestat is bold! He's enthusiastic! And he's defiant of all the rules! I mean, he doesn't just bend them, he breaks them into little pieces. He's fun!

Lestat's voice is like no other character I've ever read. He feels more real than any character I've come across. And you will, I guarantee, want to spend a lot of time with him (thankfully there are other books in the series told from Lestat's perspective).

So, what is the story about? Well, without giving too much away, it's Lestat's story from age 20 (beginning in 1760) until 1984 when when he re-awakens. It tells his life as a mortal man growing up as the seventh son of the marquis in the Auvergne region of France, his life in Paris as a theatre actor, and his unwanted change into a vampire, left alone by his maker to try and live in the world.

His time as a vampire takes him from Paris, to Egypt, and later New Orleans (where he makes Louis and Claudia). Finally, at the end we reach the "present" (1984) where we experience the first of the Vampire Lestat's rock concerts. And many of his kind are particularly unhappy with Lestat for his seeming desire to tell the world that vampires exist!

My advice? Read this book... it's terrific. Please let me know your thoughts if you're reading, or read "The Vampire Lestat" and lets chat.

I'm currently re-reading the third book in the series, "The Queen of the Damned", and should have a review for that book in the next few weeks. ( )

The Vampire Lestat is undoubtedly my favourite vampire novel next to Dracula. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good story about vampires, and I would particularly recommend it to anyone who's read Interview with the Vampire. The Vampire Lestat is the sequel to Interview with the Vampire, and it centers around the character Lestat. When I first read the book I wasn't sure I was going to like reading only about a character who I really didn't like in Interview with the Vampire, but it really redeems him as a character, adding depth to him when he seemed so one-dimensional. My only complaint about this novel was that I found the writing to be a bit repetitive or lengthy in certain areas, and that's probably the only reason I haven't given it five stars. ( )

..e lo stream of consciousness contemporaneo. Meraviglioso. ( )

Book 2 of The Vampire Chronicles, this story started better than the first one (Interview with the Vampire - IWTV) but fell short midway through in my opinion. The description is tedious and drawn out, and I found the back stories for some of the side characters unnecessary. I very much enjoyed the part about Lestat’s human life, his family and friends, and everything about Nicolas, Lestat’s best friend. Nicolas’s downfall was hard to read and I blamed Lestat for all of it. His selfishness in the name of protection contributed to Nick’s path into darkness and, because of that, I disliked Lestat as much as I did back in the first book. I despised Lestat’s wretch of a mother and wished she would’ve died, permanently. Armand’s back story was interesting but I didn’t see how it contributed to Lestat’s life or the choices he made. Marius’s back story, however, I loved and it fit well with this story.
I was disappointed with the recap of IWTV. It’s from Lestat’s POV but we learned very little about why he acted the way he did with Louis. Why didn’t Lestat help Louis and instruct him even though he couldn’t betray Marius’s secret? Why didn’t Lestat tell Louis that he only fed on criminals, not good people? (Though I’m not even sure if Lestat followed his own rules all the time while in New Orleans.) There were too many unanswered questions.
For me, the best part of the book was all the scenes set in 1984, before Lestat was turned into a vampire in 1780, and Marius’s back story.

I remember loving this book when I first read it and I'm happy to say that has not changed. This is still one of my favorite novels. This whole series is my favorite, if I'm being honest. Lestat is such a charming impulsive troublemaker that I can't help but want to know what he's going to get into next. Marius is a really interesting character to learn about and from in this particular volume as well. ( )
