Fiction. Thriller. HTML:A prosecutor defies the FBI, CIA, and Mafia to bring terrorists to justice in this thriller from the New York Timesâ??bestselling author of Justice Denied.

After hijacking a flight to Milwaukee, a group of Croatian terrorists inform the FBI of bombs they've planted across the country. If their demands are not met, the bombs will explode. The plan goes perfectly until one of the weapons goes off in the Bronx, killing a police officerâ??in assistant district attorney Butch Karp's jurisdiction.

Prosecuting a few terrorist cop killers should be a slam-dunk, but Karp and his assistant, Marlene Ciampi, are getting resistance from unexpected quartersâ??including the NYPD itself. The Archdiocese of New York hires a top lawyer to defend the accused. And when the FBI, CIA, and Miami Mafia team up to undermine the case, it's clear these Croatians are no ordinary terrorists. As Karp and Ciampi uncover powerful ties, and secrets that reach from anticommunist Cuba to Nazi war crimes, they realize their fight for justice has become a fight for their lives.

From the New York Timesâ??bestselling author and former Manhattan assistant district attorney, Depraved Indifference is an insider's "damning indictment of our court system and an entertaining exposé of the DA's office" (Publishers Weekly).

It had a good plot, but the style wasn't my type (kind of rough vernacular) and towards the end it seemed a little convenient and unbelievable. This was recommended by my husband as Tanenbaum is one of his favorite authors. ( )

I read this series in all the wrong ways - the first book read was number 12 - I went back to #1 and found that I liked the characters as well as the setting and background so I continued. Then I realized that these books were set in the 70's, I thought, this is going to be so dated and hard to get by without computer and cell phones but I was very much surprised.

The story is so well-written that I never thought about how there were no cellphones and the areas where there were "computer printouts" only made me laugh reminding me of the early days of computers. What really startled me was the date and action of the story 9/10/76 about the hijacking of a plane. Was it prophetic, I don't think so, just eerily chilling.

I'm ready for my next trip back to the 70's already. I love a good dose of justice! ( )

In this book, I felt that the storyline was better. However, it suffered from too many characters. There is such a thing as too many. Too many characters introduced in the beginning with no downtime to digest all of the many characters. I agree with another reader that the voices all started to sound the same.

Yet, I found Marlene to be a nice strong voice. Her and Karp's relationship helped added relief to the story. In addition, Marlene is probably the only person that can get Karp to loosen up as well as become the boss. While, Marlene is strong and smart, she has a bit of a fun girly side to her as well. Nothing wrong with a princess bed and dresses and heels.

The part that I didn't like the most about this whole book is that by the half way point, neither I or Karp were any closer to learning a motive for the hijacking. At this point I jumped ahead several chapters to speed the story along. Yet, it was kind of too late as I was disinterested and found the ending alright. ( )
