This is not an educational illustrated book, and there isn't a lot to take away from it, other than the lovely illustrations.

The story is of two boys, the older boy is more revered than the second. When the second brother falls into the well, despite the mother's every day warning, the oldest boy finds the old man with a ladder who assists the recovery.

Later, it is the eldest who falls into the well. The smaller child runs to find the man with the ladder. Because the oldest son is more revered, his name is much longer. The second child is smaller and in his excitement, cannot pronounce the entire name of his brother, thus leading to delay.

After he is recused, his name is now shorter.

Classic tale of two Chinese boys who ignore their mother's warnings, and wind up falling into an old stone well. Fun to read aloud. ( )

I obsessively read this as a kid. I think I still have it memorized. ( )

An incredibly fun read aloud to younger children, elementary age, addressing the question of short names for Chinese boys. This title may actually fall under the "Tall Tale" genre as there is disagreement as to the tale's country or origin and lack of cultural sensitivity. Curriculum tie-ins: Chinese culture?, folktales, tall tales

Well now ... there's a whole lot wrong here.

The story, the basic story, is actually hilarious and the art has some wonderful elements as well. However, there's a whole history/present of white folks making fun of the names of folks from Asian cultures that makes this story uncomfortable. All the more uncomfortable because it's a retelling of a story that is, more likely than not rooted in a Japanese folktale, presented as a Chinese story and there's a whole history/present of white folks wanting to treat all Asian cultures as homogenous.

No one has to be any particular culture for this story to work. In fact, it would work for way more people if it didn't since it wouldn't expose Chinese children (and other Asian children because of point two above) to mockery. Would love to see a retelling of this retelling. ( )

I hope that people realize that "Tikki Tikki Tembo" contains very INCORRECT information about Chinese culture...What's even more disturbing is that the introduction written inside the book jacket made the story sound like a real folklore.

Below the review is a discussion of both the review and the book.
