"This book is the last in a series that has examined Turner's watercolours from successive decades of his life. The final years from 1840 to his death in 1851 saw Turner produce some of the most remarkable and innovative works of his long career, as well as some of the most beautiful. Sunset skies, storms and the captivating play of light on water are recurrent subjects in these pictures, treated in a manner totally unlike anything yet produced in Britain at that time. Visiting Venice in 1840, Turner was inspired to make a long series of sumptuous watercolours, richly seductive works which revel in the unique quality of light and sparkling reflections as much as the elegant architectural triumphs of the serene city. In Switzerland, which he visited several times in the 1840s, Turner tried to capture more ethereal effects of light and atmosphere, as well as the expansive drama of the Alpine landscape. Examples from the important series of finished watercolours and studies which resulted from these mountain tours are included, as are sketchbooks which Turner took with him. So too are some of the watercolours Turner made as his health began to fail, expressive and startlingly modern visions of sky effects, beaches and the sea, which show no diminution of the great artist's powers."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
