In an age where the Church ruled and anything but the missionary position with your spouse was a sin, people still wanted more. That is clear from the fact that this book exists, was translated from the original French to English, and at least one parliamentarian admitted to reading it. I'll add in my own assumption that even without this book there would be a lot of people asking for forgiveness for their bedroom activities based on the Church's guidelines. Samuel Pepys, an Admiral and Parliamentarian purchased his own copy in England, in 1668 when he saw it in an average book store. Though, he notes he bought it in plain binding as he intended to burn it after reading as not to disgrace himself if someone found it. He skipped church the next day to peruse his purchase and on conclusion wrote this in his diary: -It was not amiss for a sober man once to read over to inform himself in the villainy of the world... it did force my prick beyond stand all the while.-… (més)

The 'School of Venus' originally dates from 1655, and this Panther edition favours readers with a detailed and scholarly history of the progress in its publication since that date, detailing its widely varying fortunes as public attitudes to erotic literature have changed as a result of changes in social attitudes. Donald Thomas, the translator of this edition, has provided an extensive (63 pages) and detailed discussion of such historical factors, and of the context they should be set in. The book itself is delicately translated, and is essentially a 'how to' guide to the heterosexual erotic arts. As would be expected from its date of publication, the book offers predominantly male viewpoint, although it is written in the form of a dialogue (a common form in those days) between two women, and concentrates on the ways in while a male gives pleasure to a female. Attitudes to the 'inconvenience' of pregnancy are characteristic of upper-class affluence and privacy. This edition of the book, at least, provides a fascinating insight into the development of erotic life and its literary representation, and will be enjoyed by any student of erotic literature. ( )

I liked this book very much. It was very illuminating. The poor authors got into a lot of trouble for publishing it, though, as it's all about non-marital sex and pleasure. ( )
