It has always been the policy of the B. C. Q. to bring to the notice of its readers pieces of good printing that are considered really worthy of attention, both for matter and manner, and such a one is before us now. ... [T]he Golden Hours Press now to produce a Marlowe. Three volumes of this edition are at present available: Dr. Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Hero and Leander. The remaining six are to come out at the rate of approximately two a year. The text used is the standard Oxford Marlowe, edited by C. F. Tucker Brooke; the type is 14 pt. Bembo, and the paper English hand-made. The volumes are fairly square, and this straightway offered a problem to the printers in the designing of their type area. The page is apparently built round the prose passages of the plays, and, of course, when the verse is printed the outer margin becomes wider than the lower one. In most cases this is hardly noticeable, but it must be admitted that the Hero and Leander volume is not perfect, though it is still very handsome. ... Each volume is illustrated with wood-engravings by a different artist ... Dr. Faustus contains four full-page designs and a headpiece by Blair Hughes-Stanton, of which the most impressive is the appearance of Lucifer, Belsabub and Mephistophiles; Helen, 'the face that lancht a thousand shippes', though not very beautiful, is a superb piece of technique. ... Connoisseurs of printing will await the future volumes with interest, and those who wish for a good text of Marlowe well printed should look at this edition.
