They're wonderful fall reading. I thought I would try out one of her books that weren't in this category and chose The Dead man in Indian Creek. For a mystery geared towards middle grade readers, the book was surprisingly well written. Though the cast of characters capable of being the "bad guy" is quite short and therefore it's easy to figure out where the plot is going, the characters seem realistic and well written. The small town setting in the 80's or 90's is among my favorites as I can connect it to my own past. Overall, this was a wonderful book and I enjoyed reading it. First just let me say--how incredibly ugly is this edition's cover? The faces look like melted wax sculptures. Hahn writes what I can only describe as a great juvenile crime thriller, complete with a (unrequited) love triangle, drug rings, late-night chases through dark streets and teenagers drinking up by the old quarry...well maybe that last bit is unique to the juvenile branch. After the discovery of the body, the story builds up really fast and Matt and Parker come face to face with a dangerous underside to their quiet town. Some of the action is a little far-fetched, but I was as willing to just go with it as I was when I first read this. Hahn's characterization of the two boys and their respective troubles is believable and I like how realistic Hahn was about presenting some unfortunate facts of modern life. For example, Matt's parents shake their heads in disbelief at the notion of drugs in their town. Matt just nods his head and thinks about how, if he wanted, he could think of a dozen places to get them. It was the same with me, well maybe not a dozen places, but they were around. Hahn is simply a great storyteller. I notice that in the last decade or so she's focused on ghost stories. There's a lot of good to be said about those stories and they probably sell better, but she's one author who doesn't need to rely on them. From back cover: The face stared up with dead eyes, it's mouth open, its hair swirling in the creek water. Matt and his friend Parker found the dead man. He'd been murdered. And the worst part is, Parker thinks he knows the killer. He knows him all too well. But he needs some proof. The evidence may be out at the olde Mill, but Parker and Matt have to sneak out into the darkness to get it because nobody takes their story seriously. Nobody, that is, except the killer. And he takes them very seriously. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

When Matt and Parker learn the body they found in Indian Creek is a drug-related death, they fear Parker's mother may be involved. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
