I'm not a Colfer fan, but this had good reviews. I was a bit worried at first, but it definitely was a good read, although a bit long. Eoin Colfer shows once again that, when freed of the burden of churning out another Fowl novel, he can write entertaining, imaginative fiction still. There are flashes of humour and a somewhat unlikely setting, but the reader is drawn in to this generally serious tale of invention and redemption. Perhaps only The Supernaturalists and the first two Fowl books are better. This is another one that appeared at the library, and I'm not sure what made me request it. It took me all week to get 100 pages into it, and now I'm giving up. I really don't care for the pseudo-biographical narrative. It feels so distant from the action and I had no emotional connection to anything going on. It did start to get more exciting around the 100-page mark, but by then, I really didn't care. I was hoping that this would be a good reluctant reader choice, but I think it would take a pretty dedicated reader to enjoy this one. For the record, I didn't have much patience for Artemis Fowl, either, but for other reasons. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

In the late nineteenth century, when Conor Broekhart discovers a conspiracy to overthrow the king, he is branded a traitor, imprisoned, and forced to mine for diamonds under brutal conditions while he plans a daring escape from Little Saltee prison by way of a flying machine that he must design, build, and, hardest of all, trust to carry him to safety. u felt like the end was sort of rushed while the beginning just slowly played out, and I liked the main character, but I didn't feel that close to him.
otherwise, good book. (>v (
