The gruesome torture and murder of Sarafina York evokes memories for New York Police and Security Department homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas. She and Feeney had investigated four similar murders some nine years earlier. The serial killer, nicknamed The Groom because of the ring he left on each body, spent hours torturing his brunette victims. This time, however, the victim he’s chosen worked for Roarke.

And The Groom has his sights set on Eve.

All the expected characters make an appearance in this, the twenty-fifth in the “In Death” series. Anchored by the strong sense of place, the narrative opens with a case that mirrors one from the past, one that Eve worked with Feeney. Despite the fact that the serial killer is decidedly despicable, there are still moments of humor, witty repartee, and romance [all of which readers have come to expect in an “In Death” book].

The camaraderie and ever-deepening relationships are at the heart of the telling of the tale, but here the intriguing case is equally as important. There are some difficult moments between Eve and Feeney, but all wraps up well after the plot takes some unexpected twists. It’s a solid story and readers will find it difficult to set this one aside before turning the final page.

An old case comes back to haunt Eve and Feeney. Now they must get him before Eve is the victim. It seems the serial killer is after Roarke and his people. This time the killer leaves clues that they can follow. They have their plan and it fails.

I love Eve and Roarke. I like the family that's been grown around them with friends and co-workers. When Feeney feels left out, Eve and he get into it and Eve feels bad which she never would have before Roarke. I like the interactions between personal and professional lives. This is comfort reading for me. ( )
