An Irish mother must flee her beloved homeland for a new life in America, in the "gripping" second novel of the acclaimed historical trilogy (Publishers Weekly). When her friendship with a runaway slave sweeps her into the volatile abolitionist movement, Gracelin gains entrée to the drawing rooms of the wealthy and powerful. Still, the injustice all around her threatens the future of those she loves, and once again, she must do the unthinkable. This is the second book of three. Again a beautifully written book about Gracelin O'Malley, starving Ireland and the immigration into New York. ( )

After reading the first in the Gracelin O'Malley trilogy earlier this month I decided to continue on with the second. It comes to the point that for her own safety, as well as for the safety of her daughter, Grace must leave Ireland. With help from her friend Julia, passage is booked on a ship to America where she will join her brother Sean.

For many Irish, life in America is little better than the one they left behind, but for Grace there is a home again with friends of Sean, and a job in their pub. Sean is still involved in Irish politics and drama remains in their lives but they are both sheltered and have food and friends. This book isn't as intense or captivating as the first, but I liked following Grace in her new life. Though there are challenges and danger throughout, the book ends on an upbeat note and now I'm interested in how the future plays out for Grace and I'll soon read Till Morning Light. ( )

Grace, Liam and Mary Kate have left Ireland and arrived in Liverpool, securing passage on the Eliza J, bound for New York City. Despite having paid in advance for a first class cabin, they have been relegated to steerage and it doesn’t take long to experience the horrors of sea travel, which was the lot of those trying to leave Ireland.
